Various initiatives have been implemented to combat the issue of ineffective communication in health care settings, take the 'clinical chatter' tool for example. This tool was given to each nurse on a unit creating a universal communication system and providing the most up-to-date information on patient status (Talbott, Watson, Tariman, &Sorenson, 2016. There were less reports of medication errors and overall increased nurse satisfaction (Talbott, Watson, Tariman, &Sorenson, 2016). Image: (Research gate, 2016).

A research article entertained the idea of self-reflection and evaluating what one can do to improve their own communication skills before extending to an external solution (Payton, 2018). The leadership team which came up with the self-evaluation checklist took a different approach to solving the age-old problem of having all members of a health care team on the same page (Payton, 2018).

A study completed on a labor and delivery floor followed the implementation of hourly "huddles" specific to patients in their second stage of labor (Wood & Stevenson, 2018). As the second stage of labor is the most intensive and has the highest risk of complications occurring, this hospital implemented a time-out “huddle” at complete dilation and continued to complete this hourly until birth was accomplished (Wood & Stevenson, 2018). Image: (UCSF, 2014)

Being a good communicator is an integral part of nursing assessment, by creating strong communication skills in nursing students this will only help them later in their professional careers (Azevedo et al., 2017). A communication module was introduced to first year nursing students and this study simulated clinical scenarios they may encounter both at clinicals and in the professional role of a nurse (Shorey et al., 2017). This simulation allowed students to act as leaders instead of their instructors, like in traditional roles, and thus strengthened both the student’s leadership skills and communication skills as these two-go hand in hand (Shorey et al., 2017). With the 'clinical chatter', the hourly huddles, self evaluations, and so on, the nurse leaders on the unit were being proactive in seeking a resolution to the problem.

Effective communication in the clinical setting is a multifaceted aspect of working teams in any given facility. There are multiple factors which play into a facility being cohesive, collaborating, and overall keeping patient outcomes positive. The one tie which relates every study or article regarding effective communication together is the importance of strong leadership in the health care setting. All of the initiatives discussed which work to improve effective communication to in turn improve patient outcomes could be implemented by a strong leadership team in a facility which recognizes the problem and works to solve it.
