After reading the research findings below, indicate which of your respondents' answers were accurate and which were inaccurate. Discuss the possible source of any inaccurate beliefs.

1.- Women and men report similar levels of life satisfaction and happiness. In their analysis of Gallup World Poll data, Ed Diener and Louis Tay found that gender was a poor predictor of life satisfaction, with men scoring higher in 72 nations and women scoring higher in 76 nations (detailed in Myers & Diener, 2018). In countries where significant gender differences in SWB exist, they seem to be associated with women's lack of access to resources and opportunities (Tesch Romer, Motel-Klingebiel, & Tomasik, 2008).
2.- People are generally happier in wealthy than poor countries. This may be due to some common characteristics of wealthier nations, such as political stabil ity, lack of ethnopolitical conflict, educational opportunities, and better health (Myers & Diener, 2018).
3.-Self-esteem tends to be more strongly associated with SWB in Western cultures than in East Asian cultures. One explanation for this is that high self-esteem is more useful in individualistic Western societies where there is greater relational mobility (people more frequently join new groups and leave old ones) than in more collectivist East Asian societies (Yuki, Sato, Takemura, & Oishi, 2013).

© Copyright material from Susan B.

In recent decades, thousands of studies across the globe have investigated subjective well-being and over 40 countries have implemented a mechanism for assessing the subjective well-being of their citizens. Subjective well-being (SWB) has been defined as "... a person's cognitive and affective evaluations of his or her life" (Diener, Lucas, & Oishi, 2005, p. 63). Thus, SWB involves the way people think about their own life satisfaction (the cognitive component) and their general mood and emotions (the affective component). Some measures of SWB have simply asked people to rate their overall level of happiness, whereas others have involved self-report questionnaires, sampling people's real-time experiences, asking people to reconstruct their prior day, measuring brain activity, and analyzing the use of positive and negative emotion words on the Internet (Myers & Diener, 2018, p. 218). SWB comparisons have been made both on an individual level and on a national level. The purpose of this activity is to learn about SWB while assessing common beliefs about its determinants.

© Copyright material from Susan B.
