Some central themes are loneliness, the need for love and the question about what a real human (connection) is. Other than this the question of what technology will evolve to in the future and how much it will take over our society is a theme.

The story contains dystopian traits like bureaucratic control, because the people in the society are under government regulations like having to win a lottery to allow a child due to overcrowding. Other dystopian traits are the futuristic world and technological advance. Dystopian traits are also shown through Monica because we, through her, can feel that she feels something is wrong. She is lonely, sad and distant, and incapable of loving David. This is not like how the typical dystopian protagonist shows that something is wrong within their society, but between the lines, we still feel her unsettlement. As a dystopian story, it clearly comments on the real world on topics such as materialism and difference of standards of living in different societies.

In the story, humans think they are real and that David is not real because he is an artificial being/robot. However in the story humans are the ones struggling with isolation, loneliness and they don’t show much love or emotion, whereas David is not human and he does show love (his letters)
