Context: Beauty and the Beast has appeared in many forms in retellings and pop culture and media, and yet throughout time, the story has been slightly tweaked. In Beauty and the Chad, Beauty disguises herself as a stable boy to work for Chad, a Beast who is a member of a fraternity

Problem/Question: How are gender stereotypes transgressed in “The Beauty and the Chad”? What is the purpose of such transgression in the modern retelling?

Claim: By closely examining the relationship dynamics of Beauty and the beast in “The Beauty and the Chad” and "Beauty and the Beast", I will show the importance of transgressing established gender stereotypes in fairy tales as the purpose of the fairy tale throughout time has been to encourage people to accept differences and deviations from societal norms.

"Beauty and the Beast" has also been a favorite among men and women in the gay community as well. Behind the well-known Cocteau and Disney films are gay men who have invited audiences to consider their reluctance to accept "difference"; lesbian writers have also been drawn to the story and rewritten it because-as one author explained-those who do not conform to the "main stream's sexual norms are also seen as monsters.

Beauty, to honor her father’s promise, goes to Chad disguised as a man and makes a “gentleman’s agreement” to work for him for almost a year. This is ironic as Beauty is a woman, and her making such promises and willing to do what is regarded to be a “man’s work” shows that she does not shy from breaking gender stereotypes. She also has a sense of pride as she declares with certainty in her tone “To atone for my father’s crime, O Beast, I shall stay in this castle and serve you” (Brennan 405). This certainty is juxtaposed with the tone that Chad adopts as he hesitates “Uh, [...] okay”. She also places a high value on honor, much like men around her time, as she considers her father’s unkept promise to be a “crime”. This transgression of gender stereotypes carries over to other aspects in the story as Beauty is shown to be much more than a beauty and is at times glad she isn’t the center of attention

When women tell fairy stories, they also undertake this central narrative concern of the genre - they contest fear; they turn their eye on the phantasm of the male Other and recognize it, either rendering it transparent and safe, the self reflected as good, or ridding themselves of it (him) by destruction or transformation. At a fundamental level, 'Beauty and the Beast' in numerous variations forms a group of tales which work out this basic plot, moving from the terrifying encounter with Otherness, to its acceptance, or, in some versions of the story, its annihilation. In either case, the menace of the Other has been met, dealt with and exorcized by the end of the fairy tale; the negatively charged protagonist has proved golden
