How Sustainability Is Becoming More Important Now Corona Virus Has Hit.

High street brands are working harder and harder in order to create a transparent brand and to make sure they are using sustainable practaces whilst creating their products. Sustainability and transparency is becoming more and more important to the consumer, meaning that they look more into what brands they are buying from and how they are producing the goods. Whilst Covid-19 has caused havoc with everyones lives, it has lead to brands being exposed to how they treat their suppliers with only '2% publish the percentage of orders with on-time payment to suppliers'. This could depict how they are not paying their suppliers on time and they are also not being treated fairly. Which has caused a massive uproar. This is something to keep in mind for my brand.

With everything that has been going on worldwide, shopping for non essential products is most likely to become less and less important. This could also mean that this is a change that could stick around for the foreseeable future. However this article has presented us with lots of statistics that are very interesting. '43% of consumers' have said that they will be more likely to support and buy from a brand after corona virus if they had treated their staff well during these tough times. '30% of consumers overall say they will buy fewer clothes' however they said they would buy from brands that have acted in a great ethical way and also that staff welfare all around the company has been managed well. This shows again that if a brand is transparent to everything going on in these times with staff and what precautions they have taken then they will have positive recognition for the brand and encourage people to want to buy from them.

More and More brands from online only stores like in-the style and asos to brands like Three Graces have decided to donate their earnings from their products to charities to support people who are really struggling. People go through daily struggles, like homeless people, are going to be hit the hardest through these times as people aren't going to be as willing to help out of their own generosity just because of the lack of food in the stores as well as the social distancing rules. Therefore this is a great thing that brands are doing as it is really a selfless thing to do, their own sales are probably down in general anyway so this is so generous. This is also gives the brand a really great reputation.

Avoiding Redundancies At All Costs

Something really negative that Corona Virus has caused is stores having to shut shops and loosing profits because of it. Due to these awful circumstances companies are having to make budget cuts which is resulting in lots of companies laying off staff across stores and head offices roles. Not only will this effect their lives in general but it will also have a huge impact on their mental health. Unfortunately they have predicted 'more than 235,000 retail jobs will be lost by the end of the year'. Lots that have already have been made redundant are having to apply for benefits for the first times in their lives, as retail recruitment is on a freeze currently. In order to avoid ruining staff's mental health and making them helpless in these times, brands should be furloughing staff with help of the governments 80% scheme so they are still able to support their families. If they are unable to do this and have to make staff redundant during these times they should offer career & counselling services for all members being laid off to ensure that they are okay. Like it said on the previous article, the kinder they are to their staff won't just help their staff it will also benefit them after this is all over to get back on track.

Garment Workers

Due to lots of big fashion brands cancelling their orders, as they're struggling to sell their current ranges, is leading to garment workers across the world not being paid. Mostly women from rural area's are being laid off and being cut off from pay and even any pay they are owed from previous months! Over 1 million workers just in Bangladesh alone have already lost their jobs due to order cancellations and buyers refusing to pay for cancelled shipment of goods that have already been produced. Lots of factories across the world are really feeling the heat of Covid-19. About 6% of factories have lost all of their order completely by brands cancelling, and 45% have lost a big quantity their orders. This is not only effecting those who loose their jobs as it is almost impossible to survive during these times for them. But it is also affecting the relationships between suppliers and companies as it can cause hostility between the two due to cancellations and refusal of payment. Again it is also going to effect the brand as they will loose customers due to the lack of transparency as this will defiantly not be something brands are exposing.

This current change to retail is creating a huge struggle for all retailers at the moment. Especially whilst people are at home and paying more attention than ever before to any kind of news.
This article tell us that many factory workers that are still working are in poor ventilated rooms, dirty conditions and have no social distance practices meaning that they are all very high of risk of getting ill. More and more people are reading these negative articles about the bad things brands are doing at the moment creating a bad image for their companies. This is a huge opportunity now, whilst they have a gap in the retail they should sit and think about what they could do to improve the sustainability of their brands. With factories either shut or low on staff due to budget cuts this is a great time to replace old sewing machines and equipment and introduce cleaner and safer systems for their factory workers. Companies need to take responsibility for their supply chain and improve what they can.

These are the shapes that are due to be on trend in fall for this year. From reading in depth about the different shapes I have whittled down to the shapes in which I think Jack Wills Target Market would buy and still sticking with their brands appearance. I have listed; puffer jackets, aviator jackets, trench coats, polo shirts, v neck sweaters, hoodies, ribbed turtle neck, cuffed joggers, straight leg jeans, midi skirts and boiler suits. These are the shapes I think would appeal to their target audience and would be a good look for their brand as they are all items that can be worn for casual and dressed up for formal attire.

However they wouldn't be suitable for Jack Wills so I went back through the list to dig out which ones I could use in my range and here's what I think would be best;Denim, Leather, Quilted/ padded and quirky knit. I think these fabrics and textures would go well with the shapes I have selected and also the colour palette and it isn't anything to bold for the brand they are all very subtle and easy to wear which is perfect for Jack Wills.

As I am trying to stick as true to brand whilst giving it a revamp I stuck to the more commonly used patterns as it will fit in better with the brand and the target consumers. I have selected; Checks and Plaid, floral, stripes, branding and polka dots. I feel as though Jack wills could incorporate these in some of the new designs we are creating.

Something that would be different and a revamp from what Jack Wills usually do but no so high fashion that it wouldn't appeal to their target audience. A lot of the themes here that I can see look like they would target and more luxury brand rather than a high street brand due to the luxury and high volume of design meaning they would be costly to make. However there was two themes that stuck out to me when thinking of a theme that would suit Jack Wills and that was 'Femme' and 'Boujiee' which I felt both could be used within the range. However I am more leaning towards boujiee.

This was a great place for the brand to start however, I had never heard of this until I had researched in detail.
