The determination helps when Alec doesn't just break down and give up. He doesn't wallow in his own sorrow until he dies of hunger, He pulls himself together to find food. The kindness helps when he tames the Black. The theme lives in the text through the carragheen moss that saved the black and Alec from starvation. The reason that I think this is when Alec finds the carragheen, Alec tells himself to keep on going and to not give up. This theme also lives in the book "Home of the Brave" by Katherine Applegate. I think that this theme shows in both books because the characters are facing a problem that is challenging. An example is when The group in Saving Mr. Terupt is having a hard time with the budget and Mr. Terupt being cut. But all of them tried to hope and it worked. And in The Black Stallion, Alec and Henry came across the problem of not having the Blacks family recorded.
