Where should geos be?

We feel that the Geotech out stations should be attached to either a base or HQ and not to specific units. This would better allows for geo techs to be used for their true purposes instead of being attached to a unit simply because they share the same cap badge. Through our interview with John Scott we learned that the Outstations being attached to Engineer units is a relatively recent change as a result of Afghanistan. Before Afghanistan MCE held virtually all of the geotechs. After Afghanistan began geos were attached to the Engineer units.

During our interviews with various Geo's there was definitely a predominate opinion that the trade should distance themselves from the Engineers on base. We feel that if the trade was attached to a HQ it would be able to better provide services in the CAF. Sgt McMurray agreed with this sentiment and felt that "In my opinion, Geotechs should be posted to Brigade HQ to support the units. Individual units should submit a tasking request for Geomatics services. Having all the Geotechs in one unit results in their time being monopolized by that unit."".

Mcpl Lalonde also agreed but said that there's two camps to this proposal and that it was a two prong battle. He continued by explaining that Combat Engineer CO's wants to retain all the assets they have. Brigade also wants to retain control. He agreed that it would be benificial to spread out assets to better service the CAF, but that they do currently get loaned out of the engineer units when requested.
