Would You Have Enjoyed Teaching in the 19th Century?? by Julie Lima Boyle

Keep in mind that, although we watched an episode of a television program from the 1980s, Laura Ingalls Wilder really was a teacher who in 1882, at the age of fifteen, received her teaching certificate. For three years, Laura taught at a small country school a dozen miles from her home in De Smet and boarded with a family who lived nearby.
Write a journal response in which you give reasons why you would or would not enjoy teaching in the 19th century. Don't forget to comment on some classmates posts and add visuals for fullest credit.

If I were a teacher in this century, I would enjoy the possibility of becoming a teacher at such a young age. The way the classrooms are set up allow for students of all ages to learn and assist each other. They seem like a close nit group! I cant think of many reasons as to why I wouldn't like teaching in that era.

As a teacher in the 19th century, I would enjoy the interaction with the students and the atmosphere. The technology back in the 19th century is not as advanced as it is today. During this time period, the books would be very interesting to read and there would be no distractions. Schools in the 19th century did not have connected classrooms. School buildings only involved one classroom. What I do not like about the teacher-role in the 19th century was the lack of technology. Although it would be great to be in a 19th century classroom, there are only books and paper. I am pretty decent in navigating through a textbook however, my experience with technology today would benefit me teaching in the present. The classroom is very limited to its atmosphere of desks and chalkboards. The only thing that would be advanced in the classroom is the clock.

I feel I would not enjoy teaching in the 19th century. Although it was much easier to get into the profession, a teacher would not be as prepared to teach compared to now. Also, I feel teaching now would be much easier as we have more technology to prepare lessons, classes are grade specific and we have more forms of transportation to get to and from work every day.
However, if I were to teach during this time without knowing of all of the advances that would ensue, I feel I could be happy. With a mixed classes I would be able to teach all different grades and this would be an easy and reliable profession to get into.

As a teacher during that time period I would not enjoy the age difference in between students and teaching students that are my age. I also would not like the lack of sources I have when teaching the children. The mix of ages would be a struggle considering the brain would be in different developing stages. I would feel as though the pressure is on me to be way more smarter and more developed at that age in order to teach. I would enjoy getting my teaching certificate at 16. I would enjoy the interaction I get with my students. It would probably be easier to connect with the kids since i'm closer to their age. I would enjoy learning with them also.

To say the least, I would not want to be an educator during the 19th century. I believe that it would be extremely difficult to teach these students without the 21st century technology. The introduction to technology has allowed for new components to be used, in which gives students a different perspective on the world around them. During the 19th century, there was a combination of different aged students in one classroom. Thus, it made it hard to teach a single subject or material as some students would have contrasting knowledge and understandment of the material. On top of that, I would not be in favor of teaching in the traditional methods.

I do think you should still go to school for alittle while before just jumping into the career. I dont think I would like the lack of technolgy though because of how much we use it for, or would need to use it for. Tech can be very useful and help keep you organsized. I feel I would not like staying with the teacher (who would most likly be a stranger), I feel it would be weird and uncomftorable.

I would not like that I would have to teach students who are older then me or even the same age. I would want to have more resources like technology so that I can project things on a screen and teach that way. I think that it would be a hard time to teach in the classroom because you wouldn't be able to look things up easily. I would want to be older too so that I could teach all ages and not have people be older then me because that would make me feel pressured. Overall I do not think teaching in the 19th century would be for me.

If I were teaching during the 19th century, there would surely be pros and cons. I would really enjoy the time period, the land and the free space. I think it is pretty cool that people were able to get their teaching certificate at such a young age but personally, I would not want to start working at fifteen. I think it is very important for educators to obtain a higher education before teaching others. I think it would be quite strange teaching kids that are the same age as me and I could possibly receive less respect. Also, Laura is payed 20$ a month and is required to room with the old teacher in order to be close to the school. I would be extremely uncomfortable rooming in a strangers house and especially, only being able to go home for weekends. Lastly, the age diversity would mess me up a little bit considering they should be learning different curriculum.

I think that I would want to be more educated before starting to teach a class at 15 or 16 because there isn't much experience or knowledge. I think it may be hard for the students to learn at the beginning because they said how old are you and asked if she had the certificated. I think it may be hard to teach at the age of 15 or 16 because of lack of knowledge and not much experience, she got her certificate just by answering a couple questions. I do think it is a good experience to learn to teach but also student teaching would be a good way to start at 15 or 16 maybe start with the teacher that got her the job she could do an internship type thing with her for a week or 2 to just get a little experience other than just going right in and starting to teach.

I feel like I would like it because it would allow me to start teaching at a younger age, and I also like the fact that it would give me the option to teach students of different ages at once so then I could try to get a grip of what each age group would be like at once. On the other hand, there are some parts that I do not think I would like which would be: having to live at another teachers(the sub),not having the technology that we have now, and although I feel as if I would enjoy teaching the students of different ages I feel like there would be a part of me that also would not because I feel like that would be weird to teach someone who is the same age as me. I also would not like the fact that there isn't really a "set curriculum" to teach you just kind of have to wing it.

I don't think I would enjoy having to teach such a diverse age group of students. I would not want to teach teenagers and if I were a teacher I would have to. I'd rather teach just the younger kids, but that would not be an option. I think it would also be hard to teach a large age range, because every student is at different educational levels. I also would find it a little difficult to teach without our usual technology. Not saying that I couldn't, but it would just be a challenge. I think having the technology we have now makes can make lessons fun and sometimes easier to plan. I also don't think I'd like to have to walk a long way to school everyday like Laura did. I don't know how she did that in heels either. So that is another part of it I wouldn't like, even if it's not a major negative. I would like teaching at a young age and getting that experience. That would be really cool and I think I would enjoy that part of it a lot.

I wouldn't like teaching in the 19th century because of the way the system was set up. The classroom were groups of kids from all different ages and different skill levels. Having to make sure you're having one on one with each student and ensuring progress vs the entire class together seems to be really difficult. Those are two things I don't like and a third would be the hassle of getting to and from school. Having to ride in a carriage and staying with the teacher, if you were subbing, just isn't something that would encourage me to teach. For me, the only pro would be that I would get to start my career at an early age instead of having to go through a bunch of schooling.

I feel as if it would be hard to teach the same subject but at different levels for each person. I would also find it difficult because im a very visual learner as well as teacher. Since there was no videos out back then, and all textbooks. I believe I would struggle teaching a bit more than if I were to teach now. Another reason I feel it would be difficult for me is the lack of technology. I try to be a very organized person and computers help me a lot, and without them I feel I would not have a good schedule and I would not like that.

Believe I would not enjoy teaching in the 19th century, although it would be easier to get into the teaching profession at a young age I believe that starting at the age 15 would be completely and totally overwhelming. 21st century teachers have to go though so much schooling and experience to be prepared to enter the classroom. If you began teaching in a classroom at the age of 15 you would be gaining real life experience but you would be not giving the best education to those students. I also wanted to mention the fact that teachers in the 19th century did not have half the stuff that we have now. When it comes to teaching now technology is used so often to grade work and prepare lessons I would think it would be nearly impossible to create lessons without any technology. Also don't believe I would enjoy teaching a variety of Ages at once I would find that to be extremely difficult.
