I wanted to recreate the feeling of intimacy and vulnerability in Mary Cassatt's original print. I simply chose to sit at the mirror in my room, doing a hairstyle I often wear. I wanted, in particular, to capture the woman's extreme slouch, a sign of her everyday comfort. The setting, lighting, and overall composition were kept soft and pink.

In recreating the Gold and Jade Crown, I toyed with the idea of what it means to be an "axis mundi." Just as the original crown was based on a sacred tree that was thought to be the center of the universe in shamanistic tradition, I thought about what the "center" of our universe might be now. I made my recreation out of a dollar store Mardi Gras crown, coins, cardboard, and plastic beads, all hot glued and spray painted together. I thought that these items represented a new "axis mundi:" cheap consumer goods and capitalism. The tree of my imagining grows money and plastic, which have taken on sacred meaning in the 21st century. We penny pinch and search for the cheapest deals and get them shipped to our homes in cardboard packages or tote them around in plastic bags.

I recreated this piece with my friend, Shelby. The original Grave Stele was a representation of the "sphere of women," and I wanted to keep with that idea. In my version, instead of picking from a dowry of jewelry, Hegeso (played by me) picks from a group of hats. Hegeso and her servant, in my recreation, sit in front of a white background. I chose to wear a 2000s-esque outfit to shift perspective to modern times and ask questions about just how much the sphere of women has really changed. I wanted to draw parallels between the opportunities afforded Hegeso (in the home, as an object of beauty) and those we allow women in the 21st century. I felt that the emphasis on female beauty and reverence is almost as prevalent now as it was then.

I found this piece intriguing for a lot of the same reasons I found The Coiffure intriguing. I love that there is a quiet, comfortable reverence to the main female subject. I also found an interesting way to think about the content of The Grave Stele of Hegeso in modern times; as a mirror and a way for us to reflect on how much progress we have made. I wanted to think about how the male gaze can permeate in even something as simple as a grave marker. I think, in some ways, the male gaze is present in Hegeso, and our discussion of gaze, and particularly male gaze, has been one of my favorite parts of AP Art History.

This piece took some friends and family to recreate, and I still didn't fill all of the characters! Henri IV Receives a Portrait of Marie de' Medici is what I would imagine a blind tinder date set up by a friend would be like in the 17th century. This is what I tried to portray in my recreation! "Henri IV" looks at the Instagram/Facebook photo of their soon-to-be date, "Marie de' Medici" (shown with a photo from my Instagram). His friend encourages him over his shoulder. The Gods, portrayed by my parents, watch from above, looking ambivalent; almost in a protective way ("don't hurt my daughter!"). All of this is set in front of a white background. This was just a fun, modern recreation of a humorous work of art!

I loved that it was a part of a larger series chronicling one woman's life, and her life wasn't even that interesting! It was just to feed her ego! This piece was begging to be adapted to modern times (the recreation practically made itself), and I adore how needlessly dramatic the composition and subject matter is. It is one of my favorites!

I wanted to capture a new energy and new way of looking at the Ecstasy of St. Teresa with my recreation. I thought about the double-edged sword of attention. I wanted to explore how much "ecstasy" and joy we feel when people pay attention to us; when they want to take our picture. But I also wanted to portray the angel as paparazzi. The angel takes "St. Teresa's" (me) picture, while she sits in utter bliss in front of a white background. I thought that the use of the camera could touch on a part of the Ecstasy of St. Teresa that I found fascinating: the audience is seeing and gaining pleasure from an intimate moment in Teresa's life. I wanted the camera and use of "paparazzi" to capture this idea. Audiences gain "ecstasy" from the most private moments of celebrities' lives.

Why this piece?

This piece has stuck with me throughout the year. There are just so many layers to it! I loved that it mixed erotic imagery and religious iconography. I was also really intrigued by the male gaze evident in Ecstasy. St. Teresa is a powerful religious leader, but, in this piece, is also a sexual object and an outlet for voyeurism. I wanted to capture this idea: that St. Teresa, in this piece, was on some level meant to be lusted after and looked at (hence my use of the camera).
