He talks about the extremely difficult phases and obstacles that he had to face throughout the whole time, especially during "Hell Week." Hell week is five and a half days of extremely cold, agonizing, and exhausting long work with nearly almost no breaks at all, even through night.

In chapter 6 of Lone Survivor, Marcus Luttrell and his team finally arrive in Afghanistan and set out to capture or kill Ben Sharmak and destroy his weapons and explosives. During this time, they come across a few Talibans and very rough terrain. It's interesting to see how lighthearted and humorous they are for such a furious and well disciplined group of special forces.

Chapter 7 of Lone Survivor contains the overall most significant moment throughout the book so far. While Marcus and his team are trying to get to one of the villages that was required for their mission, they were unfortunately discovered by two shepherds passing by. Because of this, they tied them down and had to decide between shooting them because they were a witness against them, or letting them go because they weren't a direct threat and would otherwise be misjudged for being seen as brutal murders in America for killing America's own enemies. In the end, the team decided on letting them go, which then caused the events that led Marcus and me to believe it was the worst decision he had and has ever made.

Because of their decision made in the previous chapter, Marcus and his team were ambushed by terrorists and were forced to jump off two cliffs breaking and dislocating many bones in the process. Mike Murphy, who was Marcus's best friend, risked his life by crawling to the end of a rock ledge that was out in absolute plain sight in order to contact their base for air support. While attempting to do this, Mike was shot in the back but despite all his wounds, continued to do anything he could to save his team. He was able to call for help before being shot too many times for him to handle and just helplessly lied on the end of the ledge screaming, "Help me, Marcus! Help me!" Until his life was finally ended. This moment is what now has caused Marcus to make this book and what has caused him to hear Mike's voice yelling for the same thing he said before dying every night.

Marcus Luttrell had to deal with many extreme obstacles, challenges, and discouragements in chapter 9 of Lone Survivor. First, Marcus needed to climb up a ridiculously steep mountain in the pitch darkness of night with no moon, later to find that he was being chased by his enemies all while still having severe injuries. Then, he stepped onto an unseeable nothingness, fell straight off the mountain, and in some spectacular way still survived after all the tumbling down the cliff for what he presumed to be about half a mile. He continued for around six more hours climbing up the mountain again despite being so thirsty that he would chew his socks for even the slightest chance of getting water. As Marcus proceeded to go around the mountain, he finally heard the precious sound of running water. But as soon as that happened, he was shot in the leg by a sniper which led to his fourth fall down the mountain and then was attacked by three more Talibans. He was able to escape and even though he could barely stand anymore, he had finally reached the point to where he could see the priceless water before slipping and tumbling down the mountain for around a thousand feet yet another time. At times he even pretended that his now deceased friends were by his side and helping him in order to get the least amount of encouragement as a way to advance towards surviving. All of these problems, all of these challenges, all of this pain he went through all so that he could keep his promise towards his friend's last plead and so that he could make sure that everyone knew about the courageous sacrifices of his buddies.

Once Marcus's three friend's had passed away, the helicopters had finally come for the rescue. One unfortunately and unknowingly was attempting to drop it's crew off right next to a Taliban bunker and was blown right out the air by a grenade launcher that had hit the fuel tanks. That helicopter fell into debris and it's entire crew died, that crew consisted of Shaun and James, another two close friends that Marcus once knew. Afterwards, a couple of other helicopters landed so close to Marcus that he could almost make out the faces of the pilots. He tried to contact them using a radio but his mouth was so full of dirt and so absent of moisture that he couldn't speak, so they just left him. If only he had been able to just yell or make any form of loud sound that could've caught the attention of the pilots, he wouldn't have had to face what came next, which is why I believe this moment to be a big part of his story.

When Marcus had finally reached the spot that contained one of the most crucial substances a human requires, water. He was enjoying the satisfaction that it brought until he was interrupted when he discovered that three Afghans had been right there watching him. He immediately went into a mindset of aggressiveness and defense but was much too feeble at the time to quickly take action of that mindset. He attempted to get cover behind a big rock but was way too slow to do it stealthily enough before they would've blown him into pieces with their AKs, but they didn't. Instead one came up to him, he befriended him, he and helped him. His name was Sarawa. They told him that they were people of no harm and anti-terrorism. They took him to their village to continue help him recover. Although he didn't completely trust them, he still allowed them to take him, there wasn't much else more he could have done.

Marcus tried to spent the next night sleeping in the village but was way too worried and discouraged to even close his eyes. Suddenly, the door banged open and a few Talibans ran in. They mercilessly interrogated him using their legs and their fists, breaking his wrist, and scoffed at him. "We've killed all of your buddies," they said, "We've already cut everyone's head off, and you're next. We shot down your helicopter and killed everyone on it. We will kill you all! Death to the devil! Death to the infidel!" All of this would have been Marcus's demise if it weren't for the arrival of the village's leader. Using his foreign language, he was able to convince the terrorists to leave.

Soon after the interrogators were forced to leave, Sarawa and a couple of other friendly villagers came into the house. They brought him out, across the river that Marcus had drank from, and left him in a cave. Sarawa told Marcus that he'd be back in five minutes but after that an hour, Marcus presumed that they had just left him to die. He finally lost it and broke down crying. He thought that this was going to be the last thing he ever saw. He had lost all hope for surviving. He later found that there was a nearby nest of ants that kept coming out and eating him alive. Even though he thought he was going to die, he wasn't going to pathetically let these stupid little bugs do it. He took all his anger, depression, and frustration out on them.

It was the next morning and Marcus hadn't slept. Suddenly, a herd of goats came from behind the cave and ran right over him. The cave was made of fragile sedimentary rock and had a thin roof. It caved in and the sand and rock fell all over him. When he was finally able to uncover his eyes, he saw the barrel of a rifle pointing straight at him and, behind it, the smiling face of one of the villagers that found him the day before. His name was Norzamund and he handed him a plate of flat bread and goat's milk. Sarawa had also returned and continued to attend his shot up left leg. Norzamund stayed after Sarawa left and took care of Marcus.

Apparently, the Taliban had arrived at the village and was looking allover for him. So Marcus was taken higher up the mountain into a better and safer cave where he was greeted by the chief's son, Muhammad Gulab. Muhammad and Marcus easily became good friends and were able to communicate with each other about their families and homes fairly well.

When Marcus was able to speak the introduction and the conclusion of a Muslim prayer. The child laughed and brought some of his friends, some of those friends brought their parents, and some of those parents brought their entire family. They all had a big dinner together and stayed up trying to talk with each other and learn about each other. When it got late the adults and children left then the teenagers left, finally the chief came in to discuss their escape plan. Their plan was for Marcus and Gulab to get over a huge granite mountain and behind it would be a US military base not too far away. Marcus didn't like the idea of that but if his beacons did not succeed, he would have no choice.

As they were doing so, they hid in a big area of bushes. They waited there until Marcus looked to his upper left and saw the leader of the entire Taliban group that was there, staring right back at them. The person that Marcus and his former team were there for, Ben Sharmak. Marcus could've shot him right then and there, but his military could've surrounded Marcus and Gulab and if he were to kill Ben, his army would annihilate all of those who were in the village, everybody who had helped him since Sarawa found him. Marcus lowered his gun and Ben handed Gulab a note, a note that said, "Either you hand over the American, or every member of your family will be killed." And he walked away.

Many children and parents ran over to get it and three times they excitingly charged back into the house Marcus and Gulab were hiding.
