"I woke from my apathy just at the moment when two men came up to my father. I threw myself on top of his body. He was cold. I slapped him. I rubbed his hands, crying:

'Father! Father! Wake up. They're trying to throw you out of the carriage. . . .'

Response: This part of the text is a tense moment of desperation, his last grasp to everything he has left. This shows that even at one of his weakest points both mentally and phyiscally, Elie would remain at his fathers side just has his father had encouraged him to carry on earlier in the text. The words are powerful, using the word 'apathy' to potray where his emotions lie and how indifferent he really was. This is effective because at this point, Elie considers his father a weight on his shoulders, a burden to carry, but he doesn't give up. His past taunts him, and all his father had given him he would return.

"My father was crying. it was the first time I saw him cry. I had never thought it possible. As for my mother, she was walking, her face a mask, without a word, deep in thought. I looked at my little sister, Tzipora . . She already knew it was useless to complain. . . I had no strength left. The journey had just begun and I already felt so weak."

Response: This portion was at the beginning of their journey, potraying his parents strength and tight relationship with elie and his siblings. His father held fast through the entire situation, until he met his end at elies side. This shows what an impact elies father had on his son, and what a role model he had become. The family remained together until they were seperated by an unavoidable fate; one that tore them apart, but just so happened to give elie something many no longer had. A will to fight, and retain that spark of hope even when all seemed lost. With his father at his side, they faced many challenges that tested his faith and morals. But with that last memory of home in his fathers eyes, elie prevailed.

". . Maria, our former maid, came to see us. Sobbing, she begged us to come with her to her villiage where she had prepared a safe shelter.

My father wouldn't hear of it. He told me and my big sisters, 'If you wish, go there. I shall stay here with your mother and the little one..

Naturally, we refused to be seperated."

Response: This piece of text holds true to the social standards of a strong family relationship. Although their odds were in better chance in hiding, the family remained intact until parted. This portion of the text uses the word 'naturally.' which makes it seem like there was no doubt on the childrens mind that they would stay by their parents side, even with the maids brash act of emotions. Before the holocaust this family was told to be active, both socially and ecinomically. Although it could be arguable, the children more often than not take on their parents beliefs and morals. Since this holds true, the familys' strong will kept them together until the end.

Why couldn't he have avoided idek's wrath? That was what the life in a concentration camp had made of me ..."

Response: This passage goes into dept of the struggles that ELie had to face as both him and his father made their way through the camp together, even in tight situations. Elies thoughts really go into detail about his mental struggle, much like everyone else in the camp he is facing his own demons. The imagery in this piece of text allows you to notibly see what elie was going through, but regardless stayed by his fathers side. That last bit of hope he seemed to loose sight of, but never gave up on.

"My father had huddled near me, draped in his blanket, shoulders laden with snow. And what if he were dead, as well? I called out to him. No response. I would have screamed if I could have. He was not moving.

Suddenly, the evidence overwhelmed me: There was no longer any reason to live, any reason to fight."

Response: In this passage, it shows just how much his father had impacted him during camp. His father had become his will to live, his will to fight. They carried on together, and up until this moment elie hadn't faced a struggle alone. In this brief text, elie believes his father is dead, and sees the mark his father truely had made. How he had impacted his choices, his wiser decisions, and structure to their unprepdicatable life style.

Elie's transformation

Throughout the book, elie's perspective has changed drastically and he has been exposed the reality much quicker than any child should have been. This also occoured in many cases during this time period as tragedy struck. To begin with, his faith wavered an he had called upon God but it had fallen on deaf ears; in his perspective, no one was awnsering. His silent prayers unheard, and his humanity just about slipped through his fingers. Many of the Jews had lost all hope and been stripped of their bearings, from loosing their familes to being forced into harsh labor. This is shown well throughout the story, but elie had an upper hand many could no longer grasp. His last bit of hope in his faith, his ties to home. His father. As this story shows us just what its like to walk a path of self-destruction, it also miraculously examples the power in family loyalty. This helps Elie hold on to that faith he was so desperate to loose, something he so cherished only weeks before hand. Up until his fathers last breaths, Elie had something stronger than the beliefs that seemed to have gone unawnsered.

Application to the world today

This concept goes hand in hand with the structure of our society today and our beliefs. Loosely this follows the loyalty that we rely on in our familes, and the tight knit groups that we stand beside in what we trust. As shown in multiple case examples, when hard times are brought upon it can bring people closer together, esspecially if its impacting everyone individually. This was shown throughout the book night and can be applied to our everyday life styles in more ways than one. Such as tragedy, in any given sense. You typically grow into your parents beliefs, because its all you've known. And as shown in night when you're stripped of everything you have, it may just be the one thing to keep you intact.
