Compare and contrast your own personal experiences with participatory (Karaoke) and presentational (Art Music Concert) music-making. (You’ve completed both tasks in earlier modules.) What do you value in each? How do your experiences line up with the various reading and thinking you’ve been doing on this topic over these past few weeks?

It's interesting to think about the differences between participatory music making and presentational music making. For one the term "music-making" to me is the actual creation of the song from lyrics to melody to everything and I think that's my "western" music mindset based on the idea that music making is song creating rather than in the moment creation of sound that would be considered music. When I come to terms with this version of music making I think of how karaoke to me isn't typically valued in the sound/production of the musical piece. It's obviously for enjoyment but people don't listen to karaoke so they can thoroughly enjoy the actual music but the intention is more so for community involvement and having everyone equally part of the music making. On the other side is presentational music making which to me would be on the other end of the spectrum in that its goal typically isn't to involve everyone but to perform for everyone and present the best sounding and looking version of the music for an audience's enjoyment. To me I enjoy presentational because of the respect I have for the music I'd honestly rather not hear someone sing over a track much like karaoke and I'd enjoy more a well put together musical piece. For me being a worship leader I "preform" song on stage, but at the same time we push for and encourage the congregation or audience to participate in the worship so it's sort of a mix of both ideas though I'd argue it leans toward presentational. To me both styles play an important role in music making and the outcome of both usually is a fruitful positive result.

In this photo you see this group "participating" together creating music, rather then preforming in front of people. It seems almost as a rehearsal which maki=es me thing if you're rehearsing with your band and theres no audience would that be considered participatory music?

In this picture you can clearly see Drake is "preforming" for thousands of people in the goal to satisfy their desire to see good music. Typically performance involves a desired talent to be viewed by people that being Drake. Rather then is=n participatory where really ant=yone can do .

This is a live performance of elevation worship doing "O Come to the Alter". I put this video because it's interesting to see how they're clearly preforming yet at the same time they're presenting a chance for the audience to join in the worship and you can clearly hear the audience singing which adds to the mix making it also somewhat participatory.

"The true beauty of music is that it connects people. It carries a message, and we, the musicians, are the messengers." (Ayers, 1)

"The best mbira players could offer their best performance at a ceremony but if no one joined in singing, clapping and dancing, the performance would be considered a failure… Although the drummers or mbira players perform the most specialized core musical roles in ceremonies, they are not considered the stars of the event with other contributions being secondary. Rather, they, along with hosho (shaker) players, are more like workmen with the special responsibility to provide a firm musical foundation that allows and in fact inspires others to participate."
