Bailey Patterson: “Beards May help men stand out like monkeys’ colourful markings”

This video described a few different species of monkeys and the techniques they use to stand out in a population and attract females to mate with. Professor Cyril Grueter, a primatologist who is especially interested in the causes and consequences of living in groups, has conducted research on snub nosed monkeys in China where he found that when populations increase in groups, it becomes hard to differentiate members. Because of this, more flamboyant traits, or as he describes them “ornaments,” are being passed on more frequently because recognition is easier. He then later equates these findings to the trend of human males growing beards. Because they are a display of masculinity and people are able to easily identify the bearded from the non bearded, it has become a more frequently occurring phenomenon especially in urban areas where lots of people live very close together. Because of the article’s findings, I learned that humans are very different than primates in many ways but both species have similar ways of adapting and standing out in large populations where it is hard to be remembered, in order to pass on their genes.
https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/video/2015/apr/02/beards-men-social-status-monkeys-video
