Mount Olympos is known as the dwelling place of the 12 Olympian Gods. These gods would often gather here under the leadership of Zeus, the chief deity.

The gods’ home was believed to be above the clouds, in a location unreachable by mortals. For this reason, "Olympos" was seen as a divine and sacred realm.

The 12 Olympian Gods
The most well-known 12 Olympian gods are:

  • Zeus – God of the sky and thunder, king of the gods

  • Hera – Goddess of marriage and family, wife of Zeus

  • Poseidon – God of the seas

  • Demeter – Goddess of agriculture and fertility

  • Athena – Goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare

  • Apollo – God of the sun, music, and prophecy

  • Artemis – Goddess of hunting and nature

  • Ares – God of war

  • Aphrodite – Goddess of love and beauty

  • Hephaestus – God of fire and blacksmithing

  • Hermes – Messenger of the gods, god of trade

  • Hestia or Dionysus – (varies by source) Goddess of the hearth or god of wine

Its highest peak is Mythicas at 2,918 meters and is the highest mountain in Greece. It is located in the Thessaly region, close to the Aegean Sea. According to ancient Greek belief, the chief god Zeus and other Olympian gods lived here. Due to its rich vegetation and natural beauty, Mount Olympus has been declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO today and is a popular route for nature hikers.
