I believe this holds him back because he isn’t able to go out and get as much work as he would be able to if he were on his own and also George isn’t able to spend his money on things that ranch workers would usually spend money on such as gambling, alcohol and visiting the cat house. If George were on his own he may enjoy his life more but with Lennie by his side he is therefore saving his money and will end up investing in something much more beneficial than alcohol such as a house or farm. So, it therefore helps George to not waste his money. Lennie also helps George become a very caring individual and parenting figure.

George struggles to keep ranch work because of Lennie's inability to control his strength.

Over all, George's life would be very different without having to care for and look after Lennie. Assumingly George's life would be much like a typical ranch worker's life. For example: without Lennie, George would be able to travel more allowing him to look for more suitable work. Moreover, he would be able to drink more go to pubs and have much more leisure time, for example: playing cards. However, even though George almost regards Lennie as a burden, it could be seen that caring for Lennie has allowed George to stay on track with his life.

Without Lennie, George's life would become similar to most other ranch workers: lonely and monotonous, going from ranch to ranch, making money and spending it all. Whilst Lennie does make life harder for George, eg. making him lose jobs, George has built up a dream of owning a farm with Lennie, giving him an aim to work towards, forcing him to save his money. Lennie also provides company for George, ensuring that his life isn't lonely and keeping it interesting.
