Literary Canon Text:

The Diary of a Young Girl, by Anne Frank

This diary was written by a young, teenaged girl during the Second World War. She was hiding with her family in the attic of a house for two years during the nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The diary speaks of her struggles being cooped up in a small place with her family and other people, and how she copes with this reality.

This would be a good book for an Intermediate class because Anne speaks about the terrors of war, of being in hiding, of the sadness that she experiences, but also of joy and hope. It would give students insight into the atrocities of war as well as well as the pain that people often suffer at discrimination and prejudice. In addition to all of this, Anne Frank was a gifted writer and this would provide students with a challenging and stimulating read.
