         <description><![CDATA[<p>Retention means keeping information in memory over time.<br>Transfer means using what’s learned in new situations,  like using counting skills to solve story problems.</p><ul><li><p>In first grade, we build retention and transfer through:</p><ul><li><p>Practice and review (retrieval strengthens neural pathways)</p></li><li><p>Connecting new learning to prior knowledge (like linking letter sounds to word building)</p></li><li><p>Active engagement (students learn more when they do, not just listen)</p></li></ul><p>When students can connect new material to something familiar, the brain’s networks become stronger and more flexible (Ormrod, 2020).</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Children who have experienced trauma may process information differently.<br>In stressful situations, the amygdala (the brain’s emotional center) becomes overactive, and the hippocampus (memory center) may not work as efficiently.</p><p>This means a child might:</p><ul><li><p>Have trouble concentrating or recalling directions.</p></li><li><p>Appear forgetful or distracted.</p></li><li><p>Struggle with transitions or learning new routines.</p></li></ul><p>A trauma-informed classroom helps calm the brain’s stress response so students can return to a “learning state.” Building trust and predictability restores the balance between the emotional and memory systems (Souers &amp; Hall, 2016).</p>]]></description>

         <title>Types of Memory</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Sensory Memory:</strong> Lasts only a few seconds. When students see a picture or hear a sound, it helps them notice what’s important. For example, when you show a bright letter card, the image enters sensory memory before they focus on it.</p><p><strong>Short-Term (Working) Memory:</strong> Holds small amounts of information briefly while students use it. For instance, remembering directions long enough to complete a task.</p><p><strong>Long-Term Memory:</strong> Stores knowledge for a long time, like when students remember letter sounds weeks later. Repetition and practice help move information here.</p>]]></description>

The <strong>hippocampus</strong> helps move information from short-term to long-term memory, and the <strong>amygdala</strong> adds emotion — which means students remember better when they feel safe, happy, or excited (Sousa, 2022).</p><p><em>Example:</em> Singing the alphabet while dancing helps encode the memory using sound, movement, and emotion.</p>]]></description>
