For example, in chapter 2, Bruno said “this isn’t home and it never will be” [ pg 16 ] after his family moved to the Out-with . this shows that he refused to accept out- with would be his home. Bruno's diction here suggests that he is very adamant to go back to Berlin. Bruno's use of an absolute term 'never' indicates that he is in fact rejecting Out-With and the idea that it will ever be a comfortable place for him to stay. Therefore, Bruno is stubborn in the sense that he refuses to accept his current circumstances and tries to cling on to his past memory of Berlin. :)

In chapter 2, he was unaware of the war and mass persecution he was caught in the midst of. Instead, he wishes that life will quickly resume to normal. To add on, he lives around 15m away from the concentration camp yet he still is unaware of the horrible suffering happening around him. Lastly, we think he is a very sheltered child as his parents try to hide the harsh reality of the war and his father’s “high class” and important job. 😀😀 wake up bruno 😡😡😡👎👎👎👎👎😤😤😤😤

Hence he is a well brought up child with a relatively good personality.

Bruno is very sheltered. He does not know about the terrible war and persecution going on around the world, or the grim role his father plays in the gruesome massacre of the prisoners in Auschwitz (that's right). For instance in page 3 to page 5, Mother tries tell Bruno about significance of Father's job, saying "Your father's job... You know how important it is, don't you?" To which Bruno replies innocently, "It is a very important job." This shows that Bruno is oblivious (This example does not show that Bruno is oblivious. In fact, he agrees with Mother that Father has a very important job. You need to look for another example to show that he is blissfully unaware of the horrors of the war.). to what is happening around him, and the immense impact his job which is determines the fate of countless prisoners in the concentration camps. Thus, I find Bruno to be very sheltered.

Bruno is a well brought up and relatively obedient child in front of his mother but rude towards their family maid, Maria. This can be seen in Chapter 1, page 1, stating“... his mother had always told him that he was to treat Maria respectfully and not just imitate the way Father spoke to her.” This suggests that Mother teaches Bruno the right values and that he is to be respectful towards others regardless of status . This is in contrast to how he treats Maria in Chapter 1, page 1 which shows Bruno commanding Maria to take her hands off his things. This implies that Bruno is impolite to Maria as he orders her around despite being way younger than her. Bruno is not a totally obedient child as he tries to convince Mother that the family's move out of Berlin is a bad idea when Mother already told him that " '...we have to make the best of a bad situation.' " (Pg 14) and " '...this is our home for the foreseeable future and we just have to make the best of things.' " (Pg 15) and " 'this is where we live now, ...' " (Pg 15) Bruno also asserts his views on Mother and urges her to persuade Father to send them back to Berlin. Bruno tells Mother, " 'I think you should just tell Father that you've changed your mind...' " (Pg 14) and " '...we should probably get up early in the morning if we're to make it back to Berlin by tea-time tomorrow.' " (Pg 14) Mother becomes increasingly frustrated with Bruno's persistence and asked Bruno, " 'Bruno, why don't you just go upstairs and help Maria unpack?' " (Pg 14) Instead, Bruno retaliates and replies, " 'But there's no point unpacking if we're only going to—' " (Pg 14) Mother snapped at Bruno, as she could not stand Bruno's stubborn and assertive nature, and says, " ' Bruno, just do it, please!' " (Pg 14) Thus, Bruno is a slightly obedient child and also a relatively well-brought-up, as sometimes he listens to his mother and sometimes he doesn't.
