I observed that children were playing together. ‘M’, ‘K’ were playing in the slide. They went up and down to the slide appropriately. ‘B’ who was playing with sands came to the slide, and he was starting to climb on the slide from the opposite side. Then the other two children who were coming down from the top said that they could not slide down smoothly. They were scared and told ‘B’ to move from the opposite side. When ‘B’ did not listen to them they were starting to slide. I immediately approached there, and I guided them by using ‘I- message’ to avoid collision among them. I told ‘B’, “I am scared to see you climbing from the opposite side of the slide because when your friends are sliding from the top of the slide you will be hurt”. If you want to slide you could ask your friends to join with them. He listened to me, and he abstained sliding from the opposite direction. As a result, I could save the child from the collision.

This artifact has a significant meaning for me as an ECE student because in this situation, I need to ensure children’s safety first as well as not ignore the other children. I believed that I-message is the most ideal and desirable method of setting limit when teacher owns the problem. It is a three-part statement that expresses behavior as problems. By using ‘I message’ I could express my own feelings, I could also provide information to the children about what was happening, and the reason of why I was scared. It helped me to explain my feeling when a child did the wrong things, and there has any chance to harm to the children. It also helped the children to regulate their self-control. When I described the total situation such as my feeling, what is happening, why I am concerned and the result of their movement. ‘B’ could understood the situation, and requested the other children to give him opportunity to play with them as their playmate. The other children accepted his request, they played together happily. It made me very happy.
