La historia presenta a el Príncipe Prospero, este intenta evitar a una peligrosa plaga que se conoce como "La muerte roja"

escondiéndose de esta junto a los habitantes SANOS de la isla y con sus amigos. El decide realizar una fiesta de mascaras con siete habitaciones en su castillo, cada una decorada con un color diferente. En el medio de su fiesta, una misteriosa figura disfrazada como una victima de la muerte roja empieza su recorrido entre los cuartos. Prospero muere luego de enfrentar a este extraño, cuyo "traje" demuestra no tener nada bueno en su interior; los invitados también mueren.
