The history of Niue started in 900 A.D. When Polynesian sailors from Somoa settled at the island of Niue. Captain James Cook was the first European to sight the island, but Captan Cook could not get to land there due to fierce opposition by the local population. Britannica claimed this was due to native fear of foreign disease. Cook then named Niue the Savage Island. The population of Niue is 1,624 as of 2015.
