Detailed ultrasound and appropriate follow-up is recommended for all women who develop varicella in pregnancy to screen for fetal consequences of infection. Women who develop complications of varicella such as pneumonia should be treated with oral antiviral agents.

Topical lotions such as Aquaeous cream and calamine lotion can be used to treat varicella in pregnancy as pose no harm to fetus.

If you are succeptible to varicella in pregnancy you can be given an injection of varicella Zoster immunoglobulin. This will not prevent the virus but can make it milder and cause it not to last for as long. This vaccine is however derived form blood products and therefore may not be suitable for all women.
