Starting in 1968- 1980 there were a million deaths from hunger, in 1991 civil war and drought led to major hunger in Samaria. In 1998-2004 during the second Congo war there was 3 million people died from starvation. In 2011 there were 285 000 deaths from famine. In 2017 there was a humanitarian crisis involving 25 million people. In 2020 there was a massive number of food decimated affecting over 4 million people. Most recently, in 2021 in East Africa 33.8 people had mild food insecurity and 7 million people had starvation.("Reid Katherine".)

1.What is the issue? Who does this issue impact, why and how?

Food Insecurity is a global issue that affects many people all around the world but specifically in Africa. 160 million people in Africa are going hungry due to this crisis and places like Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Somalia are all facing food insecurities and as of now, it's the worst food crisis in the past 40 years. This crisis is hitting hard on many families, especially the parents who are skipping meals just so their children can eat that day. Many families also have to leave the country and end up leaving loved ones behind who aren't able to join them because of their physical state. Overall this issue is affecting many families throughout Africa who are faced with difficult decisions to make for the benefit of their families.("Africa Hunger Crisis.")

It is important to realize how significant food is around the world. Some places have shortages and are not able to pay for the food and to supply their families. Even as the inflammation rates keep rising, it is getting harder to provide for ourselves. With no food, lots of children and citizens in Africa are dying from starvation. It is important to have the required food in a day to help with our physical and mental development. With no food for families, many people resort to stealing which can lead to big punishments. As privileged Canadians, It is important to realize that not everyone in the world has the same food resources as us. We have access to many farms and grocery stores. We should know to never take our food for granted.("World Bank Group.")

To help stop food insecurity in Africa the Canadian government is there to assist many Africans by launching a fund on June 24 to help send money over to Africa and globally to help bring detrimental resources to many families all over the world. This fund will bring resources such as ‘’food, assistance, emergency cash and vouchers,and ready-to-use therapeutic food used for emergency feeding of malnourished children, as well as complimentary water and sanitation and health interventions that support food security and nutrition outcomes’’. This fund overall helps many people worldwide including Africa with many things they are in desperate need of like food which is the main issue right now. Previously on July 15-17 2022 you were able to donate money to this charity and Canada's government would match your donation dollar for dollar which is amazing and extremely helpful to those in these tough situations.(“Canada's response to the hunger crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa.”)

How does this issue impact your identity as a citizen of the world (why did you choose it?)

It impacts our identity as a citizen in the world because it is important to acknowledge how something so accessible to us can be something so difficult to get for others. This makes us think twice before we go and waste resources such as food when kids and families all over the world are facing food insecurity and also makes us more grateful for all that we are able to have and access so easily. For example, when you're hungry you would just go to your fridge or pantry and grab a snack because it's so easily accessible to you. This is different when you live in a country with food insecurity and not being able to just get up and grab a snack when you're hungry. We chose this topic because we feel it was so important and everyone should understand the severity of food insecurity. Food is a resource that all living beings need and when someone isn't able to access it it can lead to many tragedies such as starvation or cause sicknesses because of malnourishment. Overall Food insecurity is not a joke and if we don't start to take action, we can face a global decrease in populations all over the world.
