Black Death Origins

The origins of the Black Death can be traced back to the Gobi Desert of Mongolia in the 1320s. Although Black Death is also thought to have originated in the arid plains of central Asia. The plague then travelled to Crimea by 1343. It was in Europe between 1346-1352 but peaked at 1348-1350. It was thought to have been a bubonic plague outbreak caused by a bacterium called Yersinia pestis that is carried by fleas on rodents, that travelled on merchant ships. From the desert, it spread out in all directions. Of most importance was the spread eastward to China. China suffered an emergence of bubonic plague during the early 1330s.

The Black Death plague had three forms. The most common form was the bubonic, with symptoms of swellings or buboes that appear on the victims. They appear at either the victims neck, armpit and/or groin/ This form causes nausea, headaches, vomiting & fevers. Another form was pneumonic which infected the lungs and was past through exhaling air and coughing. This form was very contagious. The most rare form was Septicaemic. It attacked the blood system which caused high fevers. This meant the skin near the finger nails turned a dark shade of purple/black and the patient usually died the same day the symptom appeared.

The impact that the Black Death had on the society was things such as people abandoning their friends and family to flee the plague. After a while funerals were all together stopped because of the amounts of deaths and work was ceased. Since it became so difficult to procure goods through trade the prices of the goods skyrocketed. As the plague hit workers became scarce, even peasants got rises in wages. The plague would infect people of all ages, race & class. It especially hit the people living in towns and cities as the airborne variety would hit you because of how contagious the plague was. The survivors of the plague benefited from an extreme labor storage.

As the plague was very contagious the community was afraid of all the deaths that occurred in the towns. There were so many bodies that there wasn't even land to bury the bodies. In cities such as France, London, England, etc bodies were thrown into the rivers or piled up in pits because of the lack of burial sites. As there were so many dead bodies some corpses were taken from the home and laid on the streets of the cities for days. In the city of Siena a lot of bodies weren't planted low enough into the earths surface that dogs were digging the bodies up.

to prevent the plague houses were filled with pleasant smelling plants, flowers and herbs. As well as the floor sprinkled in vinegar and rosewater. When people left their house they would carry sweet-smelling concoctions. Other people believed that the plague was sent by God to punish them for sins so others would prayer and do other religious acts. When treating the victim in the sick room a Priest was said to help and be more important than the doctor. Before treatment the victim would have to confess for their sins as all medical teachings were from the Church. The treatment of bleeding the patient was believed to release all infection from the body.
