"The instruments of darkness tell us truths, / Win us with honest trifles to betray 's / In deepest consequence" - Banquo Act 1 Scene 5

Metaphor - "Instruments of Darkness" - to resemble the witches who offer Macbeth and Banquo seemingly true prophecies, like an honest trifle, to lure them into fulfilling darkness.

Banquo's words foreshadow the central theme of appearance vs reality, suggesting that the "Instruments of Darkness" will present truths to manipulate and betray someone for a disastrous outcome.

Banquo is a character who values honour and ethical conduct, contrasting Macbeth's growing and overpowering ambition for power.

This reflects the cultural values that personal integrity should not be sacrificed for more power or gain, even if the information is coming from a suspect source.

Therefore, Banquo is seen as the controlling character in terms of the strength of his ambition for power compared to Macbeth, who is overwhelmed by the amount of ambition he consumes, leading to his downfall.

Speaker: Macbeth

Aesthetic features/devices: metaphor - compares ambition to spurring on a horse. Personification. Personification - vaulting

Themes: Ambition, guilt, desires, intertermoil (inner conflict)

Connections / CAVABs: highlights Macbeth's struggle to commit regicide and disturb the GCB. Macbeth feels he has no reason to take the kingship from Duncan. Macbeth is confused and impulsively acting on pure ambition.

Impact on the audience and the purpose: It demonstrates to the audience that Macbeth finds it difficult to justify his intent to murder Duncan - it’s only his ambition to be powerful that is pushing him to commit the act, otherwise he has no other motivation or reason for harming Duncan in such a manner.

Why is it a hard working quote?:

It is hard working quote because it has multiple fragments that could be used within the quote.
