One of the big themes of this novel is an unrelenting search for knowledge, and the isolating nature of this quest. Doctor Frankenstein is obsessed with figuring out how to create life; his obsession leads him to abandon all other areas of his life, including his loving family whom he breaks communication from. Frankenstein "worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body. For this I had deprived myself of rest and health." The decline in Frankenstein's health represents the monstrous effect an unrelenting search for knowledge can have on an individual.

In this chapter, Victor thoroughly engages himself in his schoolwork, detailing an admiration for two of his professors. He gains a reputation as a knowledgeable scientist among both peers and professors, and thinks of returning home only to drift off track into his new obsession - creating life from the dead. Victor begins to spend immeasurable amounts of time in graves and amongst dead bodies, and eventually believes that he knows where life comes from and believes that he can "bring animation to lifeless matter." At first, he hesitates and wonders if he is making the right decision but ultimately goes about trying to succeed and creates a 8 ft tall being that is composed of dead parts that he robbed from graves over the course of several months. Over the course of his experimentation, he sacrifices sleep and his health, and the gap between him and his family increases exponentially.

In this text we see the Frankenstein family being characterized and generally described. His father seems like the responsible type considering his marriage. His mother feels like the caretaker but also someone who has a bit of a savior complex considering how they brought home Elizabeth. Elizabeth is the most selfless of the bunch, and is seen as the most beautiful person. She is so called "obessed" with the sublime aspects of nature, while her partner (Dr. Frankenstein) looks more to the philosophical aspects of life, meaning he is never satisfied with the known.

We see this when he starts to think and question the structure of the human body, "did the principle of life proceed?". And then he draws back the reader to remember that he is telling Robert Walton his story and informing him that knowledge can be dangerous, "Learn from me, if not by my precepts, at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, than he who aspires to become greater than his nature will allow."

“Their benevolent disposition often made them enter the cottages of the poor. This, to my mother, was more than a duty; it was a necessity, a passion—remembering what she had suffered, and how she had been relieved—for her to act in her turn the guardian angel to the afflicted.” In this quote we can see how the mother is characterized as a person who feels responsible for most people around her, but with that comes the idea of this savior complex which is introduced in her ever so constant need to "help" the less fortunate. It seems more like a presentation of good rather than a true act.

This is because he is not search for answers, but trying to make it os that he is the most knowledgeable person on this planet, and thus someone to be remembered. It is this "curious" trait that leads him down the path of creating a monster for the sole reason of gaining recognition. We see Frankenstein starts to observe the anatomy of the human body, like how the body decays after death. We also see other elements such as wild nature. The setting of chapter, seems to be that Victor is surrounded by bodies, as he observes them, "Darkness had no effect upon my fancy, and a churchyard was to me merely the receptacle of bodies deprived of life, which, from being the seat of beauty and strength, had become food for the worm."

Victor's obsessive state rapidly increases despite coming off as slightly normal towards the beginning. He quickly goes from enjoying the sciences and considering going back home, to sitting next to dead bodies and robbing graves of body parts. He becomes so obsessive that he goes into details several times about his state of being, that he must sacrifice everything, including himself, for the success of his work. Shelley has Frankenstein describe this with several lines including "My limbs now tremble, and my eyes swim with the remembrance; but then a resistless and almost frantic impulse urged me forward; I seemed to have lost all soul or sensation but for this one pursuit.[...]I kept my workshop of filthy creation; my eyeballs were starting from their sockets in attending to the details of my employment." Additionally, he even ends up getting so wrapped up in his work that he fails to keep in contact with his family over long periods of time which just adds to how obsessed he becomes and how tunneled his vision is. But an important thing to note is his decline in moral/ethical judgment. At first, he is able to think about how his experiments might affect humanity but then he loses all his judgment and becomes obsessed with the idea of success.

We see the character Elizabeth described as the "diamond in the rough" type of girl. But her character is more than that as it represents the romantics values on natural beauty, which is presented in her stark contrast to those around her.

"The four others were dark-eyed, hardy little vagrants; this child was thin and very fair. Her hair was the brightest living gold, and despite the poverty of her clothing, seemed to set a crown of distinction on her head. Her brow was clear and ample, her blue eyes cloudless, and her lips and the moulding of her face so expressive of sensibility and sweetness that none could behold her without looking on her as of a distinct species, a being heaven-sent, and bearing a celestial stamp in all her features."
