Divriği Grand Mosque and Hospital

Located in the Divriği district of Sivas, the mosque and hospital complex, dating back to the early 13th century, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. The complex presents an impressive example of early Anatolian Islamic architecture. In particular, the meticulously crafted stone arch structures in the interior and the masterful stone carvings on the mosque's main entrances, each unique in its motifs and stone carving, reinforce the mosque's status as a masterpiece and indicate the work of multiple craftsmen. In addition to the main entrances, all the bases, shafts, and capitals of the columns, as well as the inner surfaces of the dome and arches, are decorated in a distinct and unique style. The inclusion of a hospital within the religious complex reveals the spatial construction culture of the region, while unusual features such as the absence of courtyards or columns make the mosque an extraordinary example of Seljuk architecture.

Bursa and Cumalıkızık: The Birth of the Ottoman Empire

This series of heritage sites, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014, encompasses eight urban and rural areas in Bursa and the nearby village of Cumalıkızık, dating from the early 14th to the mid-15th centuries, representing the founding period of the Ottoman Empire and its first capital, Bursa. These areas include a commercial caravanserai district and five public infrastructure complexes built by the first five Ottoman sultans, containing social spaces such as mosques, baths, kitchens, and educational institutions, which led to the construction of nearby houses and thus the establishment of the capital. The well-preserved village of Cumalıkızık is a valuable example of this urban planning and economic system, having served as a foundation village belonging to the Orhan Gazi complex and economically supporting the capital. Another element preserved within this World Heritage site is the tomb of Orhan Gazi and Osman Gazi, the founders of the Ottoman dynasty.

Warsaw was deliberately destroyed in 1944 as a form of repression for its resistance to the German occupation. The reduction of the country's capital to ruins was intended to erase the centuries-old tradition of Polish statehood. The reconstruction of the historic city, 85% destroyed, was possible thanks to the determination of its inhabitants and the help of the entire nation. The reconstruction of the Old Town, in its historical urban and architectural form, was a manifestation of concern for ensuring the survival of one of the most important testaments to Polish culture. The city – a symbol of elective power and tolerance, site of the adoption of the first democratic European constitution, known as the Constitution of May 3rd of 1791 – was rebuilt. The reconstruction included a comprehensive recreation of the urban plan, including the Old Town Market Square, the townhouses, the ring of defensive walls, the Royal Castle, and significant religious buildings.

The historic center of Kraków is top-tier European heritage — no exaggeration.

The Main Market Square is the heart of the city and one of the largest medieval squares in Europe. Its layout has remained unchanged for over 800 years. The streets still follow medieval trade routes, and the townhouses stand exactly where they did centuries ago. This isn’t a reconstruction — it’s the real thing.

The Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) was once a major hub of international trade. Silk, spices, salt, and lead were sold here, making Kraków an economic powerhouse in the region. Today, trade continues on the ground floor, while the upper level houses a 19th-century art gallery — a rare example of historical continuity.

Just a short walk away lies Wawel Hill, the political and symbolic center of Poland for centuries. The royal castle served as the residence of kings, and the cathedral was the site of coronations and royal burials. History and legend meet here, with the story of the Wawel Dragon blending into documented national history.

These temporary settlements gradually became permanent and the initial refuge of the land-dwelling peasants and fishermen became a maritime power. Over the centuries, during the entire period of the expansion of Venice, when it was obliged to defend its trading markets against the commercial undertakings of the Arabs, the Genoese and the Ottoman Turks, Venice never ceased to consolidate its position in the lagoon.

It is a remarkable synthesis of Greek, Persian, and Commagene cultures.

The complex is characterized by its monumental heads of gods (including Zeus-Oromasdes, Apollo-Mithras-Helios-Hermes, and Antiochus himself) that were part of gigantic statues (8-9 m tall) sitting on platforms facing east and west. These statues, carved from limestone, guard the tumulus of the king.

Site Name: Ephesus Location: İzmir, Türkiye UNESCO Listing Year: 2015

Architectural and Historical Significance: Ephesus is a sprawling archeological site that showcases the continuous urban development of a major Greco-Roman city over more than a millennium. It is perhaps best known for its Celsus Kütüphanesi (Library of Celsus), a masterpiece of Roman facade architecture completed around 117 AD. Our poster features a detailed cross-section of the Celsus Kütüphanesi, highlighting its double-wall construction and decorative, two-story facade with niches holding statues.

We also present the Great Theater, capable of seating 25,000 spectators, which hosted plays, assemblies, and even gladiator fights. Ephesus was also home to the Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), although only its foundations remain, which we show in our historical reconstruction.

Through this site, we explore the social and intellectual life of the Roman period and the early stages of Christianity, as the city was home to one of the Seven Churches of Revelation.
