This article delves into the challenges faced by the author, a journalist who finds himself increasingly entangled in a digital addiction, distancing him from his own reality. This addiction is rooted in his anxieties and fears about his impending fatherhood and the accompanying responsibilities. In response to these pressures, he turns away from his familial duties and immerses himself in the virtual world of the internet. The article adopts a tone that seeks empathy and understanding for his struggles while demonstrating a degree of self-awareness. Nevertheless, the author's neglect of his family responsibilities is evident.

I think Yassmine El-Rewini and Jake Wang's illustrations best communicate the article. Yassmine illustrated the journalists' inner turmoil and the imagery within the article well. On the other hand, Jake's work highlighted an aspect I also focused on in the article which is the parallel between the journalist child and himself escaping reality and reverting to a child through the internet. 

Both utilize composition, with the surrounding environment depicted as dark and turbulent, while the theme of escapism is accentuated through the author's yearning for the light in the center. This juxtaposition effectively conveys the journalist's self-imposed social isolation. Moreover, both pieces employ visual metaphors, with the former illustrating a wave that engulfs the authors desires, and the latter evoking the imagery of a womb that he wants to stay in. My preference between the two works indicates my affinity for pieces that skillfully contrast the darkness of their surroundings, pulling the author toward the central lights.

In my approach to this artwork, I aimed to explore the striking parallels between the author's escapism through the internet and the regression it induced, which transformed him into a child while evading the real responsibilities of parenthood. To convey this concept, I made a deliberate choice to accentuate and exaggerate the sense of responsibility and fear that loomed over him. This was symbolized by rendering the depiction of the child significantly larger than the author himself. Moreover, I used the imagery of the baby and the toys that surrounded them as a metaphor to symbolize the weight of his responsibilities, and the toy house as a mental cage he put himself into. I believe the utilization of the metaphors aided in allowing the viewer to delve deeper into the narrative and emotions underlying the piece.

I found that this work differed from my usual approach in the sense that while the text contained numerous visual metaphors, directly translating them into visual elements would have been overly explicit. Therefore, I had to reinterpret these metaphors in a manner that encapsulated the journalist's internal struggle without being overly literal. Typically, I tend to create more literal interpretations based on the provided prompts. Thus, this project challenged me to strike a delicate balance between imagery and subtlety, deviating from my usual approach.

I intially had the idea of employing a stipplism-esque style to illustrate gradual disintegrations of the journalist’s connection to reality. However, I found that I needed to adapt this style as after experimenting it in the composition it did not read clearly. Consequently, I modified the silhouette to have a grain and glitching effect. I believe this adjustment effectively illustrated him becoming more engulfed in the digital realm.

I think a significant challenge I encountered while working on the piece  revolved around managing the lighting effectively to accentuate the journalist on his screen while also showcasing the presence of toys around him. To approach this I decided to envelop only the house darkness instead of obscuring the entire surrounding environment. This approach was intended to highlight that he put himself into in his own dark isolated world.

To achieve a more natural look, I removed the borders of the toys in the foreground and added more shadows throughout. I also darkened the background to convey the journalist's fear of responsibility. 

To emphasize the father's fading silhouette, I replaced the glitched effect with a grain effect that aligned better with the overall artstyle. This effect shows that he is disappearing but his presence is still felt, highlighting his mental disconnection from his family. Finally, I made the mental house in which he was trapped darker to illustrate his inner turmoil.

However, after illustrating an empty dollhouse, it became evident that the composition appeared overly busy and cluttered. I felt as though the details in the dollhouse will detract from the intended message and lead to a loss of focus. Moreover, the original illustration, with its almost cartoon-like portrayal of the house, proved to be more effective in conveying the journalist's yearning to escape into his own imagination. It managed to capture the desired sense of escapism without the need for an elaborate dollhouse, allowing for a more direct visual storytelling. This realization led me to reconsider my approach and stay with the original composition.
