At the beginning of this book, we are introduced to the
main character, Jonas, and we learn that he is feeling
apprehensive for something in December. Jonas remembers a situation that scared him and realizes that his
current emotional state is more
likely to be determined by worries.Jonas worried
about the big annual ceremony at
which the future would be decided
for everyone. As well, We
learn about a ritual at dinnertime where each member
of the family shares their feelings. In the community in which they live everyone is obliged to use the
language carefully; every
wrongdoing is punished, in the
worst case with the "release".
Lily, Jonas' sister,
and Jonas' parents speak deeply about their emotions
of the day. Moreover, there are different jobs in

this community with titles such as 'Nurturers'.
A rule that has been established in the

book is only two children (male and female), per 'family
unit.'

In the second chapter, we find out that Jonas'
apprehensiveness is about the Ceremony of Twelves. For every age group,
the annual ceremony in December marks the transition to new rights and duties. The last ceremony takes place for the twelve, after which the people of the community stop counting the
years, age becomes insignificant and ultimately forgotten.
When youth aged
twelve learn their future Assignment. Every job is
selected by the Elders of the community, who note
where the children spend their volunteer hours. After
this ceremony, there is training to be completed with
new groups, as well as new changes being brought
along with it. Example: No more recreation hours and
less time with friends. Additionally, after turning twelve,
age "'isn't important', and many citizens aren't aware of
how old they are.
We also learn that there is a ceremony for each age
Category, where youth receives new items, or is given a
name at age one.Jonas is
stunned that Jonas' father broke a
rule and broke into the office and
found out a name, which is actually
forbidden.Jonas
worries about the professional
destiny of his best friend Asher
because he is "a real kid's head"
and "has no serious interests".

Although
Jonas didn't usually dream, his dream makes him feel
"slightly embarrassed' to share the beginning to end
with his family unit; it took place where he had been
volunteering the day before, except this time, he and
Fiona were alone. After further discussing this, Jonas
discovers that this is called a 'stirring' and that it is a
common thing for people his age to also have, but to
get rid of them, jonas has to take pills.Jonas
finds the excitement pleasant, but
does not want to 'step out of line'
and complies with the pill intake.

The ceremonies of all ages begin, and while Jonas waits
patiently for the Ceremony of Twelves, we are caught up
with new information in this strange community. For
example, we learn that a 'replacement child' was
necessary for the loss of another child who had
drowned, a rare thing to occur.
The author also describes new items and rituals they
perform for each age group. Other than the Nines
receiving bikes, the female tens lose their braids and the
male tens received new hair cuts.
(There is also the appearances of the Laborers, or the
Birthmothers after giving birth sweeping away the hair
on the stage.)

In this chapters, the Ceremony of Twelves commences,
and each new Twelve is being called to the stage to
receive their assignment. However, Jonas' number
(nineteen) was not called, and it appears that the Chief
Elder had skipped him. When he is finally called upon, we
learn that he has not been assigned, but rather selected
as the 'Receiver of Memories.' This is because the Elders
believe that he has the characteristics for this extremely
important role, and Jonas has the 'Capacity to See
Beyond.
This explains why Jonas saw the apple and the crowd at
the Ceremony change. His ability could also have
something to do with his lighter eyes, something that
makes him stand apart from most of the citizens.

Unfortunately, the Chief Elder made it clear that Jonas
must be 'alone', "apart', and that the rest of the community
has no knowledge of the experiences he will face. Being
an important but treacherous job, we learn that Jonas has:
mixed emotions of pride and fear.

In chapter 8 When the ceremony of twelve is
over, Jonas is called onto the
stage. The chief informs the
audience that Jonas was "not
appointed" but "chosen" to be the
successor of the Keeper of
Memory. The most boss
enumerates the qualities that
make Jonas suitable for this
position: intelligence, integrity,
bravery, wisdom and "looking
beyond things". Jonas is filled with
gratitude and pride, but at the
same time he is afraid of what
awaits him in his new role.

I think the book isn’t for young kids because they don’t realize the point of the whole book. Because I had to remind myself a lot of times that the book is a children's book, because it demands a lot of understanding from the reader. When you read this book as a child and then again as a teenager or elder person, then as an adult - each time it unfolds in a new way , and you notice a new passages that makes you rethink. But despite that, I think exactly this is great because every time you open this book and reread this, you understand things differently.

Appropriately for a children's book, the language is simple, but it is clear. I like that Jacob is written as a 12-year-old and yet I had the same thoughts as an teenager.

Some books, especially about big socio-political issues, hint more or circle around their point without really spelling it out. Maybe the authors want to leave room for interpretation for the reader. But even this book, which names its points - has to name them more clearly, since it is aimed at children - is therefore not too simplistic. On the contrary, it makes you think further because you can start from the fixed points.

The keeper of the memories is a main character from the young novel of the same name by Lois Lowry.

He is an old man with a wrinkled face and tired eyes. He is the man who holds all the memories from the community.

He lives alone in a room with shelves of books and heavy old furniture. As a young man he was chosen to for the most important task in the community. Now he has been carrying it heavily for years. The community is based on an emotionless living.

All life is governed by rules and ceremonies. The individual person plays no role, decides nothing and experiences no feelings such as pain, sadness or happiness . This life only works because the guardian of memories watches over the happy but also painful memories of the whole world (p. 110) and handles this ordeal responsibly alone . He is carrying such a huge weight that has caused him to age prematurely. The rules forbid him to talk to anyone about the feelings and memories he knows and experienced, which isolates him from those around him. His life takes place inside himself. He also realizes that the knowledge of the community is meaningless without the memories and so he has a very critical view of life in the group of the novelty. Sometimes they ask him for advice, for example when the request for more children was made. Sad and disappointed he said that they can’t do anything about it.

Only with his new trainee Jonas he gains new hope. Now he becomes a giver and transfers the beautiful and difficult memories to him. These lessons relieve him of such a (p.136) tremendous burden and the secrets. Together they can talk about everything and a loving relationship develops between them. When Jonas also quickly realizes that life in the community is not worth living without memories and strong feelings, the keeper of the memories decides that things have to be changed . Together they plan Jonas' escape, which will bring the memories back to all members of the community. The old man revives and feels new strength. After Jonas' escape, he wants to help the people in the community to live with the liberated memories, just as he helped Jonas to deal with them.
