HPE provides students with important life skills that support their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Together with these skills and understanding through HPE lessons allows students to become active citizens in their communities and successfully achieve their day to day tasks. In addition, having HPE in the school curriculum supports students general wellbeing for their academic learning. As evidence shows, quality physical education programs increase health benefits which in turn, improve academic achievement as physical activity promotes better oxygen to the brain, supports a positive mood and reduces stress and therefore improves attention which supports students to effectively learn.

Ruby Rose

I believe some components of health can be taught during formal lessons however other aspects are better understand with physical demonstrations and participation. The Health theory components when completed in a formal lesson support literacy development and oral skills that are important when discussing health issues throughout life. However, informal lessons can teach health because there are areas of the curriculum that become general knowledge and taught outside the classroom prior to engaging in the learning area. In saying this, the approach for either informal or formal lessons is on a case by case basis and dependent on the group of students and different factors that may influence what aspects of health they are taught for example religious factors in relation to sexual health.

Ruby Rose

For example, incorporating mathematics into physical activity games supports both students physical health and their cognitive / mental wellbeing.

During my schooling, different providers were engaged to run varying physical activities outside of our classroom/school programs. I don’t believe that they shouldn’t be engaged at all but believe they should be included to work with a school and individualise their service to tailor the relevant school and class. Overall, I believe it comes down to what aspects of physical activity are they organising externally providers to run in comparison to what the school and provide. I believe it comes down to resources and effective and where it is appropriate to bring an external provider, to do so. From personal experiences some of my favourite PE moments were when sport providers that offered experiences outside the norm that my school already offered - it opened our minds to other options for physical activity and even encouraged use to continue to engage in them outside of school for example obstacle courses at a local oval.

Ruby Rose

These skills include things such as developing resilience, communication, risk taking, an understanding about their own bodies and how to keep safe and healthy. This subject is particularly important in the 21st century as many young children are not achieving the recommended guidelines for physical activity.

I don't think that they should provide the curriculum entirely on their own. It is the classroom teachers or specialist teachers who would hopefully know the children best and their unique personalities and capabilities, allowing them to plan and deliver a strength-based program.

HPE is an essential learning area in the school curriculum. Health encompasses physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual health. Research has shown that poor health can contribute to poor academic achievement. Providing children with opportunities to develop knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to their health, the health of others and the community as well as movement and physical activity equips them with a toolkit for life to make healthy, safe and active choices. As argued by Morgan (et. al 2013) if children develop competencies in fundamental movement skills, they are more likely to be active during adolescence and adulthood. We need to build children's confidence in FMS's early with fun and engaging activities. These activities can be integrated in lessons which also promote the health literacy and personal social and community health outcomes of the curriculum.

ACHPER also advocates for physical activity and movement to be incorporated into other learning areas and provides resources to support teachers professional development in this area. This is one element of a range of opportunities which can be used to maximise the effectiveness of teaching and learning in physical education and student engagement. I think for majority of HPE lessons its crucial to make it interactive and make it a hands on experience. Too many subjects are formalised and can make it hard for all children to learn. It is worth encompassing diverse methods to cater to all diverse learning styles. This will give children the opportunity to learn and grow in a supportive environment. For example, steiner schools focus on experiential learning which would be a great way to teach HPE and has been a successful method of teaching.
