A stroke occurs when there is a loss of oxygen to parts of the brain, which damages brain tissue. There are two types of strokes. An ischemic stroke is a blockage in a blood vessel that prevents blood from reaching the brain, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients. This is the most common type of stroke, accounting for about 80% of all strokes. A hemorrhagic stroke happens when a blood vessel ruptures, causing blood to leak into the brain and put pressure on brain cells. This type of stroke accounts for about 13% of all strokes.

Symptoms include:

Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.

Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech.

Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination.

Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

Starting in 2001, it funded academic researchers and, since 2004, supported state health departments in enhancing stroke care quality. The program focuses on several key areas: improving care quality, promoting stroke prevention in communities, and ensuring smooth transitions of care (from EMS to emergency departments and from hospitals to rehabilitation).

George MG, Fischer L, Koroshetz W, et al.
