I feel like the poem represents Giovanni's frustration with being held to unrealistic expectations. She is expected by critiques to only be an activist and portray herself as a strong female African American poet. In this way, she feels trapped. She yearns to write freely and pass on her torch and burden in the way that Muhammed Ali passed on his title to Leon Spinks.

I think that the use of enjambment in the second stanza really emphasizes the overriding theme throughout the poem. The message that Giovanni exhibits that society, referred to as "they" and "everybody," views her as this strong African American women, when in reality she is not always this person. She struggles with revealing her true self due to criticism.

I think that the poem represents the way that Giovanni feels as someone who is not given freedom, but instead has to fight for it. She wants to break out of the box, and this is not something that she wants to do, but something that she has to.

I think the poem is Giovanni's way of communicating the freedom she wants from the box that people have put her in. She was placed in a box making her feel like she always needs to be an advocate, but she doesn't want to do that anymore. I think this poem is her way of telling her readers that she is human and that she wants to write about things in her life that are important to her other than her advocacy.

After reading and analyzing this poem and getting the chance to hear other people's perspectives on it, I discovered that I really enjoyed the message that it brought across. I interpreted it as her feeling confined to keep spreading the messages that she writes about and how she doesn't reject her own strength but does feel that she needs to continue to write in this way because no one else will.

Interpretation of Poem: My interpretation of the poem is that Giovanni wants to be free of her role as the all important and strong African-American activist that does so through her poetry. She is most likely the most free she has ever been in her life at this point but since she is stuck in this "role" of hers, she feels as though she is stuck in a box because she may want to write about other topics in her life that share the same importance.

I think the wordle and the poem relate in 2 ways, the first of which is the word 'free' and it's implications in the poem. Giovanni uses freedom as a concept, but not in a literal sense. The freedom that she is referring to in the poem is the freedom to write as she sees fit, the freedom to not have to discuss African American topics. The second reason it relates is by describing what it means to not be free.

My interpretation is she is boxing herself in more than other people are. She has such high expectations of herself because she feels a responsibility to her community. She actively does things like smoke so people don’t think she’s afraid. I actually totally relate to her feelings here. (I also think it’s interesting that she has to write but breathing is almost a choice.)

Giovanni used a variety of literary devices, some of which include enjambment, allusion, and colloquialism. The first serves to emphasize how resilient she is, laying emphasis on her strength. She used the second to compare herself to Mohammed Ali, and colloquialism to convey raw, unfiltered emotion. In essence, she uses these literary devices to illuminate the freedom she longs for in the absence of this confining box.
