Before the Civil War, slaves were mistreated and thought of as nothing more than a piece of property. As Fountain Hughes once stated, "You wasn't more than a dog to some of them in them days. You wasn't treated as goo as they treat dogs now" (http://memory.loc.). According to Alex Alexander, he "[S]lept in a one-room log hut" and, "[M]os'ly straw [in] summers an' cotton [in] winners" (http://newdeal.feri.org). Also, former slave Andy J. Anderson wrote about how slaves' last names were the same as their owner's, or their father's owner's last name. During the Civil War slaves were usually forced to either work the farms or fight for the Confederacy, while some southern slaves escaped and fought for the Union. Slaves from the north enlisted for the Union or worked in fields, households, and factories. According to http://www.civilwar.org/education/history/civil-war-overview/slavery.html, "Black Union soldiers did not receive equal pay or equal treatment. They were only paid $10 a month, minus $3 for clothing." After the Civil War slaves were allowed to walk as freemen. Most slaves stayed on their plantations and continued to work for their former masters due to the fact they had nowhere else to go. On the other hand, some slaves would go off in pursuit of a better life and an education. James Johnson, a 79 year old ex-slave from Columbia, South Carolina, stated in his narrative that he “[Felt] and [knew] dat de years after de war was worser than befo’”  (https://historyengine.richmond.edu/episodes/view/5032).  Johnson says this because the people the African Americans worked for would pay them next to nothing and would put them in terrible working conditions.
