1. HOW DOES MEDIA AFFECT COMMUNICATION?

*Because both digital and media literacy are fairly new concepts, there is considerable debate amongst experts and academics around the world as to how they should be defined. It is generally agreed that skills and competencies for digital literacy and media literacy are closely related to each other and to additional “21st-century” skills that are needed for living and working in media- and information-rich societies.[1]

For example, the key concepts for media literacy – that media is constructed; that audiences negotiate meaning; that media have commercial, social and political implications; and that each medium has a unique aesthetic form that affects how content is presented – are as equally applicable to watching TV news as to searching for health information online.

Although digital and media literacy both draw on the same core skill of critical thinking, the fact that most digital media are networked and interactive raises additional issues and requires additional habits and skills: media literacy generally focuses on teaching youth to be critically engaged consumers of media, while digital literacy is more about enabling youth to participate in digital media in wise, safe and ethical ways. However, it is important to keep in mind that digital literacy does not replace or run parallel to media literacy but rather builds on it while incorporating new concepts that arise from the added dimension of networked interactivity. At the same time, many digital issues cannot be understood without traditional media literacy.

The media is both a blessing and a curse. It can be used to good purpose as well as to obscure, mislead, lie, and manipulate our thinking, our beliefs, and our behavior. It makes us able to communicate with one another almost instantaneously, but it can also send us down rabbit holes and create friction in our relationships. Its rapidity lends itself to knee jerk reactions, so it has become easier to embroil ourselves in confrontation and argumentation. It’s easier to insult and bully someone who is not sitting right in front of you. It’s also easier to have a false sense of intimacy communicating with people you hardly know or may not be who they say they are.

Right now the world is being turned upside down by a pandemic which is decimating the world population. All kinds of information has influenced how people are responding, both for good and ill. In some instances it pits family and friends against one another. Who and what are we to believe? How are we supposed to act? What are we to say?

Spoilers have infected the media with ridiculous conspiracy theories. Media has also done some deep digging and excellent reporting on things we should know about. It has become difficult to discern what is true, solid information and what is false. This is true in print, on TV, online and through all our devices. We will all have to wade through what we are bombarded with on a daily basis.

Social media has made it possible to communicate Immediately and inexpensively with friends and family far and near. Something that can elevate our lives so much is to be embraced cautiously, used wisely, and integrated into our lives with care.
