The books are at the set of Montag's internal and if not destroyed by the firemen Beatty believes chaos should ensue due to the displeasure caused by books. "They were given a new job as custodian of our peace of mind, the focus of our understandable and rightful dread of being inferior"(58-59) This quote shows that the firemen believe without them everyone would constantly be fighting an internal war and that it is there job to keep the peace.

We see this symbol come into play as Guy Montag is standing and looking at the sky, which then started to scream, and Ray Bradbury says how it sounded as if two giant hands had torn then thousand miles of black lines down the seam, because of the jets' loud roars as they rip through the sky. "Montag was cut in half. He felt his chest chopped down and split apart. The jet bombers were going over, going over, going over, one two, one two, one two, six of them, nine of them, twelve of them, one and one and another and another and another, did all the screaming for him." In the story the firemen where assigned by society to destroy books as they had almost completely stopped being read and those who read them were knowledgeable and depressed ruining the happiness created by the ignorant majority. This gave the firemen the task o destroying every single book where it was The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli or The Cat in the hat by Dr. Seuss. "A book is a loaded gun" (58). This quote from Beatty show that books are seen as weapons and must be burned to prevent a conflict.
