Social Change

The Black Lives Matter movement began after deaths of many African Americans by police brutality. People came together and marched for the lives of those lost unfairly. Hundreds showed up to march and show support, the movement spread throughout social media and became known worldwide. Thanks to those that stood up for change in the legal system the police officer that killed George Floyd was convicted as guilty. Change is happening as social media is able to show just how real police brutality is and how people will no longer stand for it.

Collective Behavior

I think that a great example of collective behavior in today's society would have to be on social media. It is especially noticed on apps like TikTok where a lot of its audience use it to just bully or insult others. I have seen on multiple occasions that if a comment bullying a person does well then everyone else jumps on that wagon and tries to get as many likes as the original. This specific creator is a great example of how she is just followed because so many people like poking fun at her. She is a young girl that posts for fun and is made fun of for everything she does, which means her appearance, her weight, her voice, etc. People start copying what others do just to be relevant themselves or because they feel a need to be like everyone else. This video shows the comment section of one of her recent videos and because a few people made fun of her scream now the whole comment section is filled with similar comments.
Social-Conflict Perspective: Modernity as Class Society

This picture shows how we can be told that many homes are being built that many jobs are being made but never with the intention of helping those on the streets. The problem with class society is that the individuals who are suffering and who would benefit from help from the upper class aren't getting that help due to them not even being thought of as people who need help but as a nuisance. Change to make the world better needs to start with helping those that are starving in a modern society where everyone should be able to have access to food. On page 503, a picture is shown of a family in a reservation and how they do not have access to it. food or water even in the United States. This just shows that even though a Country can show that they are advanced in science and money they do not care for those that are at the bottom.

Structural-Functional Perspective: Modernity as a Mass Society

This picture is a great example of a Mass Society. Individuals work until they are exhausted for money and for their interests. In Japan, it is known that men have worked themselves to death as their only priority is to work and make money. This isolates a lot of people as they become obsessed with working or are too tired to interact with others at all. This is also mentioned in the textbook on page 501 as it states that even if people are materially wealthy they lack spirituality. I believe that this is a great example at how moral freedom can also lead to being dehumanized.

Modernization and Our Global Future

This video is a great example of how people of today don't care much about their environment and the impact that we have on it. Scientists have been telling us about global warming, they have told us how we could make a change but yet nothing has changed. We saw the TED talk about that young Greta Thunberg and how she is scared that her future is not clear because of how damaged we have made our earth. She also mentioned how our lower class never gets any sort of help and that they should be a priority and this is also seen in the textbook on page 509. We focus so much on exploration and trying to get to other planets but we never focus on how we can help this earth or the people that are suffering on it.

I chose this picture to show the differences between Modernism and Postmodernism. People in the US no longer carry that optimism that the future will be great and instead just live in the moment. (Macionis 508) Science no longer is what people turn for for answers as it is shown that although our society has a lot of answers on how to make the world better they don't really seem to take action. Times are changing and people are no longer conforming to the ideas of the past but are making their lives that of their own beliefs and ideologies.

Symbolic Interactionist Perspective: Modernity and the Individual

I really like how this video explains how an individual is shaped by not only their beliefs but by those around them. In the textbook on page 505 it is mentioned that in today's society we look to others for approval and based on that we form what is good and what is bad. An individual is able to use their experience to label something but this can change when they see a bigger majority of people labeling it as something different. Today's society has allowed many to form their own ideologies but at the same time it allows people to try and spread their ideologies to those they believe need a lifestyle change.
