It's important for our students to have a deeper understanding of their peers to understand that they are all part of the community in the classroom. I often share with parents that in CK complex, our students often come to us with that experience of having students with special needs in their classrooms for all their school life makes them see their peers as normal and part of their school/class/community.

It's important to have a deeper understanding of individuals within an inclusive setting because co-teaching is all about relationships. Understanding the individual you are working with helps you develop that relationship and improve the overall culture of the class. Understanding individual student needs is also at the heart of an IEP, but, really, teachers should strive to get to know, understand, and support ALL students as individuals.
