Having kids sign in and out. Adding their name and time. One student at a time and give a time limit. Always a good idea to give reminders of Respect the PAW behavior in the hallway and bathroom.

Setting Some Rules

Can't be the first 10 minutes or the last 10 minutes.
When giving critical direct instruction, it is not the time to ask. (Unless it is an emergency).
Can't go until a portion of their work is done.
Need to take the pass.
One at a time.

Shared POD sheet

As a Pod you have a shared sheet and decide as a team how you might want to keep track of kids using the restroom or allows students to have a certain amount of passes per week.

Works to see patterns.

Always an exception for emergencies or kids that really need to go.

Going as a Class

Setting a timer and allowing all kids to go and use the restroom. Everyone needs to be back within that time, if not they lose privileges for the next day. If they are acting up as well this privilege can go away.

This has helped with constant bathroom use and rarely are kids needing to go for emergencies

Passes

Each student gets a certain amount of passes per quarter handed out to them.
Could be different colors each quarter.
Must be responsible for keeping track of them.
One student out at a time and not when teaching.
You could even sign the passes before they leave.
Encourage kids to store them in a place where they don't get lost.

A nice visual for kids to look at before asking to use the restroom.

Am I teaching? Yes/No-then not the time to ask.

Are we working in a group? Yes/No then not the time to ask.

Are we taking a test? Yes/No then not the time to ask.

If all the answers are NO then kids can ask and take a pass-one at a time-with a time limit.

Consideration of Student Needs

Sometimes kids just need to go!

Be aware of kids who might have medical or special needs with bathroom use. You may need to adjust the rules for specific kids.

Have an emergency protocol in place for students to communicate if they need to use the restroom urgently. This should be discreet and requested individually.

Naming Pencils

I have 6 pencils (marked with a tape like a flag), that are on magnetic clips on my white board and kids check them out by writing their name on the line next to where the pencil goes.

I also started naming the pencils and writing it on their flags. This has been SO helpful! They take better care of the pencils when they have been personified like that. Plus, it's pretty hilarious at the end of class when I'm looking for one of my pencils and the kids start looking for "Carlos" and when they find him on the floor, they shout "Who left Carlos on the floor like that!"

Borrowed Pencils

Cups/Drawers with pencils.

Kids can check them out and must return them at the end of class.

Ideas for checking out:

Pencils 1-10 and they write their name next to the number to match the pencil

Incentives

If the same amount of pencils stay in the room for the whole week then the class gets a small treat, like a jolly rancher.

Ask a Friend

Material Manager

Assign a student to be in charge of the pencils for the week. Create a easy graph for them to kept track of the amount each day.
