Our department defines criticality as learning through a lens which enables students to understand the role of social injustice in society and promote social change. It is a mindset that challenges norms and seeks to question the structure of our world, so that we may become more aware of what equality should look like and strive to achieve it. In social studies, bringing in perspectives of other cultures and focusing on the impact that people in history have faced, connect to the work of criticality. This work allows us to engage in compassion and humanization for different cultures, which is part of the criticality mindset.

Our big takeaway from this reading is that criticality is an ongoing process that has to be cultivated throughout the educational experience. It is not something that will happen overnight. Criticality begins with educators. Educators need to understand criticality themselves in order to be able to embed it within their curriculum. The first step would be for educators to inform themselves about the meaning of criticality, and truly reflect on its' importance. Then they would need to find opportunities to spark meaningful conversations connected to criticality within their instruction.

Some questions our department has are:
1. How can you create opportunities for students to build criticality as a learning goal? (Especially with younger grades?)
2. What opportunities are there for educators to develop a mindset of criticality within themselves?
3. How can criticality be embedded in science, which is a subject based on fact? (It is a challenge to create opportunities for criticality when science depends on the factual evidence in the world around us).
