The novel takes place in the 1920s and is representative of a time of wealth and prospiration, which is portrayed by the character, Jay Gatsby. Jay is thought to be one of the wealthiest men in New York City, he's known for the miraculous parties he throws and his heroic and prestigious backstory. But being the Jay Gatsby is much more deep and dark than what's thought of him. He is longing for the love of his life, Daisy, and throws parties every single night hoping she'll show up. Once Jay realizes that Daisy is married, a part of his American dream dies. It becomes clear that wealth and popularity isn't the American dream.
