Although there are many similarities that make Gatsby and Nick similar, like their wealth, there are also many things that make them different. Nick represents "new money" why Gatsby represents "old money". Nick got his money because he was a bonds salesman and Gatsby was a fraud. One of the main reasons they are different is because of the way they express their feelings. Gatsby goes above and beyond because of his love for Daisy, while Nick has feelings but doesn't act on them .

Central Idea

Throughout the novel the author, Fitzgerald, demonstrates that the central idea, the American dream isn't all what it's thought to be. The novel takes place in the 1920s and is representative of a time of wealth and prospiration, which is portrayed by the character, Jay Gatsby. Jay is thought to be one of the wealthiest men in New York City, he's known for the miraculous parties he throws and his heroic and prestigious backstory. But being the Jay Gatsby is much more deep and dark than what's thought of him. He is longing for the love of his life, Daisy, and throws parties every single night hoping she'll show up. Once Jay realizes that Daisy is married, a part of his American dream dies. It becomes clear that wealth and popularity isn't the American dream. Towards the end of the story he tries to get Daisy back, but instead ruins his reputation and it costs him his life.
