Written in Olney by Reverend John Newton (1725 – 1807) for his New Year’s Day service in 1773 at the town’s St Peter & St Paul Church, today the Museum shares the history of the life of John Newton and of this hymn which, since making its debut in the Buckinghamshire market town, has become internationally known.

Less known is the life story of John Newton, a merchant and naval seaman , land based slave trader and slave ship captain whose religious conversion led him to become a clergyman and an important figure in Britain’s Abolitionist Movement.

Transatlantic slavery saw millions of African people trafficked and enslaved across the Atlantic. It was a system that saw European nations compete and collaborate to maximise profits at a incalculable human cost. And yet, often when we engage with this history in museums or in our education systems, we understand it through a national lens rather than an entangled transnational system. How can we understand this entanglement? And, considering these entangled pasts, wouldn't it make sense to work together internationally to unravel what effects this history still has on societies and people around the world today? This symposium bought together experts from a range of disciplines from the Netherlands and the UK to exchange thoughts on the history of Transatlantic slavery, and its legacies.

In September 2025, Glasgow Life Museums redisplayed the portrait of John Glassford and his family in the Glasgow Stories gallery of Kelvingrove. The portrait had long been displayed in the People’s Palace, it depicts John Glassford with his family and a child whom he had enslaved. The redisplay focused on exploring the portrait from the perspective of the enslaved child, helping to reframe the narrative which the painting has been previously explored through.
