Physical theatre is a genre of theatrical performance that encompasses story telling primarily through physical movement. Although several performance theatre disciplines are often described as "physical theatre," the genre's characteristic aspect is a reliance on the performers' physical motion rather than, or combined with, text to convey storytelling. Performers can communicate through various body gestures (including using the body to portray emotions).

It’s influenced by a number of genres, ranging from ancient Greek theater to French mime to Italian commedia dell’arte to Japanese Noh.

Jacques Lecoq, a French actor and movement coach who was trained in commedia dell’arte, helped establish the style of physical theater. He founded École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in 1956, which specialized in the practice.

Other pioneers of the genre include French actors Étienne Decroux and Jean-Louis Barrault. Together, they developed new mime techniques that allowed the performer to speak.

Antonin Artaud, considered one of drama theory’s greats, helped develop the physical theater style by advocating for performers to break the fourth wall and have a more direct relationship with the audience. Meanwhile, Japanese theater director Tadashi Suzuki helped to incorporate Noh into the practice. He co-founded New York City physical theater troupe SITI Company alongside American director Anne Bogart.

I think my performance was OK but could’ve been better. I started in a trio and choreographed some movements and ended up working on my own due to lack of motivation. I even had to improvise the majority of my movements. However, I think I did well given the fact circumstances changed so last minute. I quickly thought up movements for the piece and worked together with my peers who also didn’t have groups. I think it went quite smoothly. To otherwise improve, in future I will stay motivated in my original group.
