Our first Made2Move class consisted of a suitable warm up focusing on the muscle groups we would use throughout the session, circuits focusing both on core and aerobic fitness, these were done in two sets of 40seconds on, 30seconds off. For our cool down we were made aware that our participants had an interest in Yoga so one of our mentors preformed Sun Salutations with them to finish.

The only issue we noticed from the first session was that both participants were highly capable when it came to fitness and our circuit. Although the participants did work up a sweat, they were still able to complete the circuit without too much difficulty. This came to us a pleasant surprise as when planning the session we anticipated a lower fitness level from the mentees. To combat this, we made sure the next class would contain advanced activities as well as having shorter rest time and longer time doing the exercise, i.e.) squats were not squat jumps and the timing changed to 60sec on, 20s off.

Our pod were excited for our second class as we felt that class 1 went very well. We had prepared a more difficult circuit for the participants this time and also were going to incorporate some partner based games in order to boost morale and relationships within the class. However on the evening none of the mentees showed up so we were unable to go ahead with our plan.

Personally I feel that venue we had for the classes (the electrical engineering building) was not suitable. There were restrictions on the activities one could in that space and the carpeted floor was not ideal. I feel now that the classes have been moved to the maradyke (studio 5 and the indoor running track) there will be an increase in the quality of the classes and the participants will feel that they are in a more suitable and professional environment. This reason, coupled with the fact that we have received 63 new members from first year maths science should lead to a huge increase in attendance and propel the club and its members forward.

CLASS WEEK 4

In this class the new mentees from maths science were introduced to their mentors.
This screening process worked much more efficiently as the paperwork was cut down to only the necessary survey/questionnaire.

I also thought that the level of intimidation for the mentees was greatly decreased since the last screening, they were paired up with their mentors much more quickly and because of the amount of mentees present and the use of a second mentor as a helper not many people were left idle .This allowed for greater levels of integration.

The only issue here was that the maths science were not aware of what was actually going on. Looking back now it was not suitable to select (almost force) mentees to join like this.

The social distance between the mentees and mentors was too great here, some kind of relationship will have to be devloped first.

In this class we discussed the possible obstacles preventing people from exercising. We went through a case study of a student named David which I thought was very applicable to my mentee. Issues like living away from home for the first time and social life/freedom are barriers that I feel may affect my mentee. To combat these barriers the first step was to find out my mentees timetable and identify the best possible times to fit in exercise. Along with this I reminded her the benefits and positives associated with exercise in order to keep up morale and motivation.

Finally I added in a small home workout for my mentee to complete on a Sunday.

This class was focused on how to properly motivate our mentees. I would put my mentee in the extristically motivated catogeory. This means she is not motivated purely by interest but Motivation is external for the person. PA is undertaken for reasons other than the interest in the activity itself (Mullan & Markland; Teixeira et al., 2012). This means that it will be up to me to properly motivate her to help her complete this programme and achieve maximal results.

To do this I will need to use positive comments when communicating with her and also prescribe tasks that are within her competency so she will receive a sense of satisfaction on completion.

If she is able to develop her levels of competency, autonomy and relatedness thorough out this programme this will hopefully improve her motivation to that of intrinsic motivation. Attaining intrinsic motivation would be a great result for my mentee as this potentially will lead to an overall increase in PA and lifelong healthy lifestyle

She also played camogie but stopped for her leaving cert so I will encourage her to re-join playing.

It is important for her to see exercise as a form of enjoyment rather that a task that needs doing, this will assist her in becoming intrinsically motivated.

I feel she has fallen out of camogie for a long time now and is maybe embarrassed to return, her involvement with Made2Move may see her gain back some physical confidence and join back a club where she will be surrounded by friends who will further progress her exercise journey.

I went through this programmes with her step by step and also demonstrated the more difficult exercises.

We discussed how she was getting on so far and found out the following
- She has been keeping physically active but not to the extent that I prescribed
-The activities I gave her for her weekly plan are not being undertaken but close substitutes are ( she has attended Zumba classes instead of the "legs, tums and bums" )

Although she is not doing exactly what is asked of her I am still relatively pleased with my mentee up to now. Her taking the Zumba class is no issue at all as she enjoys it and this will help her in her search for intrinsic motivation.
However she will need to increase her amount of activity undertaken, after our meeting today I felt that she understood this herself. She even told me she would go for a jog around the lough that very evening.

Finishing up the meeting I inquired about her general well being and if there were any additional things she would like or need. I also made it clear to her that if she did encounter any issues to contact me.

The meeting concluded with a sense of positivity both in me and my mentee.

This class was dedicated to teaching us how to prescribe exercise to our mentees. It took place in the mardyke and was split into three parts, -

Information on the gym and how to use the machines correctly,

The mile run/walk test

Possible exercises that may be prescribed to our mentees.

This class was hugely beneficial to us, firstly because the information provided can help us with our own exercises. The gym safety made us more comfortable with the machines for our own personal use. Also the mile test allowed us to be put in the mentees shoes and see how the exercise actually felt. To encourage someone to run a mile is much easier when you know how it feels yourself.

I think the exercises provided by Gillian were also very useful. Each element had a progression and regression. From this I think it would be possible for mentees to do a session in the mardyke with their mentee and complete the same programme just at different intensity levels.

This would greatly boost motivation for the mentee and also create a good rapport between mentor and mentee

CLASS WEEK 2

It is safe to say that the initial screening did not go well.

Before the arrival of the first mentee, all the mentors were seated together in a large group at one side of the room. All mentors were in the same uniform and chatting to each other. This made very a very daunting task for a new member to walk into the room. It created somewhat an "Us vs Them" mentality.

Following on from this calculating the BMI and the waist to hip ratio was also an issue. For a person who may be conscious of their weight and is possibly joining this club in order to improve their
weight status and body image, being asked to stand on a weighing scales with a full room of people might make them severely uncomfortable. They may see this as intrusive or unethical and that certainly won't have them leaving the room with a positive idea of the club. This could lead to a potential member never returning.

The final issue with the screening was the questionnaires. The were multiple surveys and forms to be filled out with a myriad of questions to be answered. Some of the questions were even duplicated. This paperwork took some new mentees close to a half hour and was long and tedious.

Looking back at this screening we did not cover ourselves in glory, however this is only the very first screening and now we know what we can improved on. We can use this experience to learn from our mistakes and create a better system It is my hope that we can look into these issues, find solutions and develop a much more approiate screening tool for the future.

Cognitive
We learned that the session will not always go according to plan and that adaptations will have to be made on the spot. When planning our session we assumed there to be approximately 10 participants but only 2 showed up on the evening, one of these being 15 minutes late. These timing and participant issues forced us to change our plan for the session in order to effectively run the class.

Psychomotor
We realised that an active demonstration worked effectively in order to teach participants new movements. When introducing a new exercise verbally the participants they would not always understand fully how to complete the exercise, however when following this introduction up by a good demonstration the participants then were able to complete the exercise themselves.

Affective
The participants responded well to encouragement from the mentors throughout the session. It was also noticeable that despite being tired by the end they looked pleased with themselves for completing the class

What surprised me
The fitness levels of the two participants was surprising. They both looked very healthy and could complete some aspects of the circuit expertly. We the planned the next session to be more challenging because of this.

We looked at leadership as a theme we as PE can be role models for improving PA in our mentees, in schools and in everyday life. In this class we also went through a design sprint on how to improve the club for next semester, this was very valuable and many of the ideas suggested are achievable and hopefully will be carried through to

In this book Gladwell speaks of what it takes to become elite, to become the best of the best. Although a persons background plays a major role, the time and practice they put into their chosen area is crucial. He reckons that achieve mastery in any code an minimum of 10,000 hours hard work is needed.

“To become a chess grandmaster also seems to take about ten years. (Only the legendary Bobby Fisher got to that elite level in less than that amount of time: it took him nine years.) And what’s ten years? Well, it’s roughly how long it takes to put in ten thousand hours of hard practice. Ten thousand hours is the magic number of greatness.” — p. 41

Gladwell runs through a repertoire of people who have put this work in and are now hugely successful millionaires and billionaires for example Bill Gates

I may us this this to show my mentee that she also needs to put in hard work in order to achieve her goals. Also for her as a woman she may draw confidence from the role models he provides like Serena Williams

This ad below shows great examples of empowering women

My mentee joined this club so she could become more active and receive the numerous benefits from increased exercise levels. In order to find out if she was actually improving we had to take a baseline measurement. This was done in the first screening. We then discussed what she would like to improve in the next 6 months. Her response was 'my fitness in general'. This was the beginning.

In order for her to achieve this we had to first break this down into a SMART plan. To do this I created for her a custom weekly plan that she will hopefully follow.

It is our intention to retest the mentees at the end of this programmes and hopefully see improvements across some or all areas.

It is coming to the end of the semester and exams are imminent. Up to now I have been in weekly contact with my mentee and she assures me she is still engaging well with the programme.... up till now!

At this time she is under some stress with studying for her exams and going to work, for this reason she is struggling to find time for exercise and prioritising her other activities. I had to make her aware that this may not be the best option,

A study done by Hansen et al in 2001 revealed that

"exercising for 10 mins at an aerobic level of 60% is sufficient for increasing vigour, decreasing fatigue and decreasing total negative mood state. In addition, results suggest that confusion may improve as well"

If a can encourage my mentee to take even 10 minutes a day during this busy period to exercise it will not only help her physically but also assist her with her studying and possibly allow her to achieve better results

I have attached the link I sent to her that could be used as a possible stress busting short workout

As for mentee selection I don’t think randomisation is entirely suitable. I believe that working with a mentee who is living with or close to the mentor is much more suitable. When dealing with a person you know the connection is much more realistic and emphatic, a mentor will have a want much greater for one of their close friends or relatives to improve their physical fitness and health rather than someone they have just met. Ideally a mentee should have compassion for thier mentee and i think the best way to do this is by selecting thier own mentee

Along with this finding time to meet up with the mentee should not be an issue as paths between friends and relatives cross very often. It is possible that the mentor and mentee could take part in the activities together, as friends and both enjoy themselves.
