1. The Bureau of Labor Statistics measures the unemployment rate
2. People who have jobs are classified as employed: if any work at all was done for pay, as well as part-time or full time year-round employment.
3. People classified in the labor force are people who are 16 and older who are not in the armed forces and are not incarcerated but people who go to school, are retired, have mental/physical disability or family responsibilities.
4. Unemployment rate is calculated by unemployed individuals divided by individuals in the civilian work force times 100.
5. When the economy is doing well and people are joining the work force and becoming employed while simultaneously people are remaining unemployed and that number is growing, then the rate can increase simultaneous to employment increasing.

1. In personal people, the easiest kind of unemployment to tolerate would be frictional unemployment because if a person is leaving the labor force to get more experience per school or by volunteering themselves to leave, they likely are not at a desperate state of living if they are able to live by consciously volunteering to leave. Furthermore, if they are leaving to go back to school, they are more useful to the work force by having more experiences after their absence of employment.
2. Structural unemployment would be the most destructive to an unemployed person because the need for their job or service has thus been eliminated and it can be abrupt due to the changes in economy. Furthermore, if they only have one experience in one area and that area is eliminated from the labor force, then they may have a hard time finding work in other places.

1. Seasonal unemployment because the unemployment only comes when in January or February likely due to the Winter season.
2. Frictional unemployment because Mrs. Coughlin intends to return to her secretarial work but consciously and voluntarily exited the labor force due to sending her child to school.
3. Cyclical unemployment because there is a downswing in the business cycle so there are less workers needed with decreased demand, resulting in Pat losing her job.
4. Structural unemployment, because there is no longer a need for Karen to do her work because the work is now done on a computer so the job is not necessary in the labor force.
