Then the game makers create hounds that eat humans that she has to outrun. Eventually, Katniss teams up to help a young girl in the game named Rue who reminds her of her little sister. Even though she could have left him, she stays and helps him recover in a hidden cave until they are the last two competitors alive. The capitol tricks them into coming out saying that two people from the same district could win but then takes it back. Katniss uses her smarts and her and Peeta pretend like they will kill themselves with poisonous berries. The capitol gives in and announces them both as winners, something that has never happened. Katniss is doesn't understand the seriousness of what she and Peeta have just done, and Haymitch is the one to tell her that there's going to be a lot of repercussions from what she has done. She realizes what a threat she has become to the Capitol, and she and Peeta are able to convince the Capitol that they are in love, and for this reason, they absolutely had to win together. The elixir they bring back to District 12 is hope for the future, and the knowledge that just because things seem dark and bleak that you never know what's going to happen.
