'And he slammed Harry against the rails. Held him there, and the spray was coming over thick now, soaking Harry, drenching his hair and running down his face. And Harry was squirming and moving and trying to get his body away from the edge until Dad pulled he's hair so tight that he stopped.' 
'Harry just closed his eyes then. He just shut his eyes.'
This is an extract explaining how the father takes Harry out past the shallows on a stormy day to collect abalone for his punishment. Which will later result in physical abuse as the boat stops running resulting in no oxygen for the dad and Jeff. this extract then shows the aggression of the dad towards Harry as he blames everything on him.
This excerpt from my prescribed text of 'past the shallows' demonstrates the most significant human experience explored in the novel as it is a controversial subject throughout the novel and it creates conversation between readers. I believe the collective human experience 'physical abuse' is the most powerful experience shown within this extract as it clearly identifies the fathers real personality and how he can't manage to show love and the fatherly responsibilities towards the boys. This has been highlighted through the use of human qualities and emotions throughout the extract. the human qualities that have been demonstrated include -
Arrogant - Arrogance is shown when the Dad is acting foolish and abusive towards Miles and Harry on the boat.
Selfish - Selfishness is shown when the Dad doesn't care about his actions towards the boys or the ramifications of his actions and only cares about himself surviving. 
These negative human qualities have outlined the characteristics of the fathers actions, the human emotions that have risen throughout this extract of 'past the shallows' include of:
Powerless - The human emotion of powerless has been explored through the character of 'Harry' when the dad threw him overboard. 
Anger - The human emotion of anger is exposed through the character of 'Dad' when he quotes "These are protected waters you idiot! you always fuck everything up, you always fuck everything!" 
Fear - Fear is shown throughout this extract when Harry is afraid of the water when the father holds him under trying to drown him.
These human emotions outline Harry and his fathers emotions through this extract of the novel, by the use of human qualities and emotions throughout this extract it gives readers a more insightful view on human experiences throughout the novel. After reading this extract and exploring the human experiences my view on the world has been differentiated as the effect of the physical abuse from the novel has made me realise that not all families are close and tight and people will be betrayed within there families the novel has also taught me that the water is not always a calm place to be and may have upsides on your life and the emotions and experiences a person may be involved upon. After studying this extract of the text my assumptions have not been challenged as I was already aware that the father was aggressive toward his children from earlier in the novel for example, when Jeff and 'dad' made harry drink the 'beam'. I have considered new ideas after examining this extract :
When the novel explains that harry may not be Steve's (Dad) child and may be Nick's as the Dad throws Harry overboard and quotes to Miles "You are my son". I have not reflected on anything throughout this extract as this extract is purely about aggression, grief, anger and arrogance and I have not been apart of any of these human experiences to much of an extent. This extract allows me to understand the role of storytelling more clearly than I have previously been able to as it is easy to understand and comprehend.
