They felt like they couldn't write well, some felt as though they couldn't learn. They wanted the same success as all kids do; they want to feel smart. They want to know that they can leave school and go to college or get a job. They want to feel that they are competitive in the world. They all agreed that they needed literacy skills in order to attain that competitive status, and they all agreed that Hochmann provided it. Not teaching grammar directly, in a purposeful and integrated way to our students doesn't allow them to see how to apply the skills we teach. Hence, we don't want to teach it in isolation. But we can't just not teach grammar either, which many school districts attempted. We must find an integrated method that meets the needs of all of our students.
