At the age of 19, St Francis went to a battle against a nearby town. Francis was captured and taken prisoner in a dungeon for a year, before his father paid and he was sent free. Over the next few years, Francis begun getting visions from God. The first vision was when he was sick with a high fever, he thought that God wanted him to fight in the Crusades but he got another vision and it was to help the sick.

Kolbe was very religious from an early life. He encountered an early childhood vision from the Virgin Mary. This was significant because the Virgin Mary approached him with two crowns, one white and the other red. The white one meant to persevere in purity and the red was to become a martyr, he accepted both. At the age of 13, his brother and himself joined the Franciscans in Lwow. In 1910, he was given the religious name Maximillian and was admitted as an initiate. He took his final vows as a monk in 1914

At the age of 21, Saint Kolbe received a degree in philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He organised the Militia Immaculate (Army of the Immaculate One) after witnessing protests against Pope St. Pius X and Benedict XV. His goal was to work conversion of sinners and enemies of the Church, he would do this with the intercession of Mary.

Kolbe returned to Poland after becoming sick, and the invasion of the Germans happened and WWII started. He remained in the monastery. He opened up a hospital and aid those in need. Kolbe refused to sign a document which said he is German citizen and continued to work in the monastery and provide shelter for the refugees. He hid 2,000 Jews from persecution.

On February 17, 1941, the monastery shut down and he was arrested and taken to Auschwitz. After two months, men were chosen to face death by starvation as a warning to the escapes. He volunteered himself to take place of a man with a family. In his last days, he prayed the Our Lady and remained in the last group to survive after two weeks of dehydration and starvation. For an instant kill, the guards injected him with a lethal drug, Kolbe didn't protest and lifted his left arm and calmly awaited death.

Miracle-
"St. Maximilian had built a monastery in Japan during his missionary days there. He built it on the “wrong” side of a mountain just outside Nagasaki. Even though the Japanese builders warned him that he had chosen the wrong side, he insisted on it.

When the bomb was dropped some years later the Franciscans were shielded by the mountain and survived. There was a Church and monastic house in the middle of Hiroshima as well which despite being right in the middle of the bomb site remained untouched."
