It was just part of his disguise . He kept Washington in touch with what was going on in the enemy side. He sent him letters with secret messages in it. John Reid was a tutor for Jemima. He was there to help her become a young women with proper manners, and for education. He places ads in the Gazette to let Jemima know he is still alive. John Reid and Jemima are also in a relationship even though John Reid is eight years and seven months older than her. As it says  on page 97 it says, "Before the two weeks were up we received word from a messenger who rode into town that the British had evacuated Boston on the seventeenth of March." It also says on page 149, " Their clothes hung in tatters. The once-fine coats of the Continental Army were muddied and torn. Rags were wrapped around their necks, and their breeches were threadbare, with bloodied legs showing through." We didn't know that Washington had spies during the Revolution. We did but we didn't know that the spies put hidden messages in the letters only certain people can read. This shows one of John Reid's letters on page 102.
2. We didn't know that the British hired the Hessian's to help them fight the Americans. The Hessian's were all over Trenton which is where Jemima lives. Page  153 shows her father yelling at her for going out in the open with nobody.
3. We didn't know that Tory's didn't have a interest  in the Declaration of Independence. They just walked away or they were afraid they were going to be judged by Patriots. This shows on page  120-127.
4. Colonists were running low on supplies. We never realized how low their supplies got ever since the Revolution started. It seems like they had more supplies in the beginning then in the middle. On page 151 it shows Jemima's father discouraged because he didn't have the supplies the Army needed during that time.
5.  As being a lady, the women isn't allowed to express her feelings for a man first. When Jemima did this to John we were surprised to realize that it isn't proper for a women to do this. The father gets killed and only one out of the three boys survives. The mother daughter tutor and two slaves survive. The Tutor John Reid and Jemima fall in love and get married.
