Using English 'in situation' - and for a specific purpose - is always the best way to learn and become competent speakers of English...
Thanks to those colleagues around the world who have shared inspiring and extremely useful materials which we use for our class work. Hope they won't get offended if I do not quote them, as their wondeful materials always serve a good purpose: educating the minds and touching the hearts of our young generations of learners...

In this picture, in the foreground, there are two angels of about six years. Both have curly blond hair. They don't have clothes but they have wings. In the background there is a suggestive light blue sky with white soft
frothy clouds.
the artist was born in 1825 and BELONGS to Academicism. He received training in the Arts in one of the most prestigious Art schools of His day, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He produced a vast work, focusing on themes of classical mythology, but also ranging in the field of allegory, history and religion; Lastly, also HE is known for HIS artistic nude portraits and images of young farmers and shepherdesses. This portrait was published in 1890 - it is AN oil painting on canvas. The angels seem intimate and for me the boy is confident and tankfull bat mostly lovely against the girl. He is very sensuous as the girl. She is very affasscinated and thoughtful. She holds her harms close to her chest perhaps to emotion or for embarrassement For me she is not very insicure she is relaxed but most pensive, i don't know for what. She feels serene and tankful.
For me this paint is relaxing and comforting 'cause the colours are shade and watchig this portrait I feel very calm 'cause the angels are very tender and loving. The colours of this painting make me feel not most energetic and lively but relaxed and cheerful

He was born in 1791 and he died in 1882 in Milan. In the middle of the painting WE CAN SEE two lovers, maybe Romeo and Giuliet, and in the background we can see a shadow. In the middle, the man has got one foot on a step because he must run away fast. The woman has got a long LIGHT blue dress and long curly hair, the man has got a hat, red trousers and a cloak. In the bottom left hand corner there are the stairs.
I like this painting because it is a romantic ONE, it is visually striking and I am fascinated BY it. I think that IT is a touching painting. When I see it I FEEL inspired, FULFILLED , enthusiastic and sensitive , it makeS me FEEL free I fell relaxed and COMFORTED. It suggestS serenity and calmness and hopefulNESS. For me this painting is peculiar, FASCINATING, stimulating and attractive!
Now it is SHOWN AT the 'Pinacoteca' in Brera

By Susanna Ruzza
My favourite painting is a Vincent Van Gogh 's old master called "Starry Night". I like it so much because it is very different from other paintings. It's fascinating but INTRIGUING (spelling!). The scene takes place in the countryside when the wind is shaking the bush. There are some light and dark colours and so this painting is very realistic. This painting is divided into four parts. In the middle of the painting there are some clouds that takes up two-thirds of the space. On the left there is the same bush that is shaking by the wind; in the bottom right-hand corner there are some illuminated houses and in the top right-hand corner there is a beautiful moon. In the distance we can see some hills of different height from one another and some mountains. But in the background, scattered in the sky, we can see many starts. The viewer's attention is drawn to the elements in the sky( clouds but specially the moon and the starts that gaves the name at the painting). After this we can easily supposed that people are sleeping because into the master is night. For me the artists wants to make us feelings like calm, relax and confort. Finally I think this old master is amazing because has gripping my attention with only use of few simple but fascinating elements.

By Jari
My favourite painting is a Monet's old
master called "Regata a Argenteuil". I chose this picture because from my point of view IT is very relaxing and IT is able to express a feeling of joy. The picture was painted in oils, for me the picture is hot, restful, clear, unvarying, wonderful and crystalline. Monet was fascinated by this lake and he paints giving vent to the popular IMAGE of happines. It was painted in 1872. The picture represents a seaside landscape and we can tell from the presence of the boats and the sea. In the foreground we find the sea with the reflection of the boats and plants, on the right there is a hill with two red houses and some green trees. On the left some of the boats present surf. In the background we see a wheat field and green hills. The boats as the rest of the elements in the framework are painted so stylized and have sailors aboard in a bit to hoist the salis. If we pay attention we can see in the bottom right hand corner the signature of the painter

By Simone

My favourite painting is the famous Tree of Life BY Gustav Klimt.
The Tree of Life represents a very coloUrful tree with three figures near it.
I like this picture because it is delicate, relaxing and emotionAL.
It seems a big explosion of COLOURS but, if you look carefully AT IT, you can ALSO see a lot of relaxing lines which are the branches of a tree.
The Tree of Life is at Stoclet House in Bruxelles. This image is divided into three parts: in the middle you can see a magnific tree, an ancient simble of the life, of the season and of energy. His branches are corrugated and golden with a lot of mushrooms instead of leaves.
On a brunch there is a bird, probably a dark crow.
At the bottom there are a lot of colourful flowers.
On the left we can see a woman, she seems a chinese woman and she is waiting for something. She wears a long colourful dress with a lot of triangles.
On the right part the same woman is embraced with a man, probably her lover. We cannot see his face, only his long colourful dress with a lot of circles. This paint is very, very big, it is composed by three cloth panels and it is 2 meters hight and 7 long. It has been realized with different elements: mosaic, colored stones, coral, majolica and parts of gold and silver. I think this artwork is really a masterpiece.

This is my favorite painting,it's an old master entitleid "Wheatfield with Crows". It is painted by Vincent Van Gogh in 1890. Now It is staying at Amsterdam,in Vincent Van Gogh museum. It was realised with oil painting in carvas( the carvas it isn't really big ,infact It is 50,5×100,5 cm)
This painting is considerated the first artwork of contemporary art.
It shows a landascape. It rappresents a weath field in bright colors. At the botton There are three footpaths, they are similar to heady torrents; at the top we can see the sky. It is blue, whit dark tone similar to looming clouds. The picture is crossed to crows , they are flaying and their fligh appears menacing and funereal.
The strokes are dense, merce and vigorous.
Despite the brightness of the Yellow the atmosphere is drammatic

I love this painting because it is direct, infact IT CONVEYS immediately and easily Van Gogh's anguish and his sufferings. It seems that the canvas is an angonizing cry, full of pain.
The bright COLOUR of the wheat succumbs, won by darkness.
This artwork is similar to my life, when the darkness usually takes over.
This painting lights up in me the DESIRE to defeat this darkness and live in the light, It awakens the DESIRE to break free from the weight of the painting and stay and live happy...

By Tania Martinuzzi

Karl Spitzweg, and the title is "THE POOR POET"

the technique IS oil on canvas. It was PAINTED IN 1839. It shows a poet outstretched on his bed while HE is writing on a sheet. We can notice that the ROOM is a little small and dark and disorganized. The main COLOUR is brown. IN the top right-HAND CORNER there is aN umbrella in the ceiling, PRETTY awry... IN the top left-HAND CORNER there is a wire with a cloth hanging near the window. ON the left we can see a bedside table and above this there are AN empty bottle and a bowl. on the wall there is a jacket hanging. In the bottom left-HAND CORNER there is a stick and there are sheets of paper. At the bottom there is a boot and in the middle there are same old and big books, above one box there are a small copybook and one small botTle for the ink. On the right there is the door, I think it is shabby...
The poet seems old and sick but mostly engaged IN WRITING something and he is toughtful, and I think he is worried... I also think the poet is very sad and he wants to write all his "weakness". He IS WEARING A nightcap and old green shIrt.
for me this painting gives A bad impression, because the poet seems bored and lazy, but mostly dirty, and I find the poems are very helpful for the life and they are "containerS" of emotions and FEELINGS... For me the room in general is a bit isolated from the world

By Angelica
This document is a painting called " The dance class" by Degas, WHICH was painted between 1871 and 1874.
The painting shows a dance class , where a dance teacher is encircled by many ballerinas. The scene takes place in a dance class. The main characters are a dance teacher and many ballerinas. The painter used mainly lights colours like white, light brown and light green, but he used also dark colours like black for the ribbons of some (clothes' ballerinas9 BALLERINAS' CLOTHES. You can say that the painting is extremely realistic.
We can see that in the middle of the painting there is the dance teacher, WHO is teaching to the ballerinas. He's looking at the ballerinas on the right and he's isolated. He is holding A STICK in one hand to keep the time. He looks a bit aged, strict and serious. The painting shows many ballerinas in the background, on the left and on the right. Each ballerina wears a tutu with a coloured ribbon. We can notice that their hair IS gathered in a bun with a coloured ribbon.
They look tired, quiet, friendly and young: I suppose that they are between eight and twelve years old. If we pay attention, we can notice on a the left a painting on the wall. At the bottom we can see a ballerina sitting on the piano and she is wearing a yellow ribbon around her waist. She looks (like) extremely tired for the strenuous lesson. Next to her there is another ballerina, who is probably touchING her back; she is wearing a black ribbon around her waist and she's wearing a flower on her head. Under her skirt we can notice a little brown dog, that is looking at her. In the bottom left-hand corner we can see a strange detail, we can suppose that is a watering can. We can think that it's an unusual component of the painting, because it's a bit weird TO find a watering can in a dance class.
I think that this painting is amazing, stimulating, fascinating and thank to the light colours it makes the viewers calm, quiet, away from the problems of the life; it DOESN'T make the viewers anxious, sad, worried or upset. In fact this painting makeS me feel relaxed, peaceful and calm. I like This painting by Degas VERY MUCH because IT makes me feel quiet and because I am an enthusiast for the different kindS of music and dance.

By Michele
My favourite painting is" Venice" by Renoir.
When Renoir first visited Venice in 1881, he was drawn to one of its most famous sights: the façade of the Doge’s Palace across from the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. This view was very popular with artists; Renoir joked that “there were at least six of us queuing up to paint it.” The buildings are painted with considerable accuracy, the soft pinks and creams of their sunlit walls contrasting with the rich blue of the sky and reflecting in the undulating waters of the canal. For me , it's a beautiful painting. Venice it's one of my favourite CITIES and this picture portrays IT. I think this picture is (very, very beautuful) because it's realistic. It appearS AS a photograph. I like paintings THAT PORTRAY landscapes. San Marco's clock tower is in THE MIDDLE of the picture. This image is relaxing and interesting.

By Davide G.
My favourite painting is a masterpiece by William Turner.
This painting is entitled Mortlake terrace.
it was created in 1827 and the scene takes place in a big garden near the lake. The main character looks out TO the lake from WHAT IS probably HIS house. The painting shows a beautiful sunset in Mortlake.
We can see a dog which is probably LOOKING AT the lake; many children who are playing , a table with a chair. On the chair there is a doll and many clothes. In the bottom left-hand corner there is a small ladder, at the bottom we can see an hula oop; in the foreground there are many boatS and in my opinion they make a celebration .
in the painting there is a road which LEADS TO THE entrance of a big house. I find the trees particulary beautiful because they are very realistic and the orange reflection of the sunset on them gives me a sense of calm.
The technique WITH which it was created is oil on canvas.
The yellow background is relaxing, the colours are brigth and IT IS full OF details.
Near the dog I suppose THERE is a rock but is weird and meaningful.
In the bottom right-hand corner I love the colourful flowers.
the picture is set between 1800-1850.
In the distance i suppose there is a beautiful countryside.
The flags of the boats are big and peaceful.
On the right there is a throe lagoon.
I think that the artist was very talented because he created an amazing picture, it can ARISE strong feelings in the viewer. In fact I felt so relaxed watching it, I felt the same emotion that I usually feel during the summer.
